Critical Care Neonatal Advanced Practice Provider

The University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital is seeking a highly skilled Advanced Practice Provider to join our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) team. As a key member of our interdisciplinary team, you will provide comprehensive medical care and management to critically ill newborns, exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided.
Responsibilities- Assess patient health status through history taking, physical examination, laboratory studies, and other appropriate means, including procedures such as PICC line insertion and lumbar puncture.
- Develop and communicate treatment programs tailored to the patient's health needs.
- Recognize, discriminate, and manage acute illness, chronic conditions, and disabilities.
- Complete medicine documentation and billing procedures according to institutional and departmental guidelines.
- Integrate health information into diagnoses and treatment plans, and assist patients and families in implementing plans in the community.
- Provide ongoing health education programs for patients and families, utilizing various media.
- Initiate therapeutic measures using independent judgment, adhering to recognized clinical guidelines.
- Complete administrative paperwork, including MAC, human resource, outreach, and other tasks as assigned.
- Assume responsibility for supervisory and administrative activities, as well as special projects delegated by the Nurse Practitioner Supervisor/Medical Director.
- Apply scientific, behavioral, and humanistic principles to advanced practice at the nurse practitioner level.
- Understand nursing theory, pathophysiology, and pharmacokinetics, and perform patient and family assessment through comprehensive history and physical examination, develop differential diagnoses, and implement treatment plans.
- Document interventions and patient/family responses, and identify patient/family/community care and education needs.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of care plans, coordinating care with referral and consultation resources, community support agencies, schools, and local primary care providers.
- Participate in research activities, research findings, and quality improvement principles related to patient outcomes.
- Understand the Nurse Practice Act, including ARNP components, and perform technical skills defined by collaborative practice agreement according to Iowa Board of Nursing and UIHC standards.
- Function as an independent practitioner within guidelines of the collaborative practice agreement, Iowa Board of Nursing, and UIHC standards.
The University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital has been dedicated to meeting the healthcare needs of children and families since 1919. As Iowa's only comprehensive children's hospital, we provide care for children from birth to young adulthood, offering a range of services from promoting wellness to caring for general childhood illness, surgery, traumatic injuries, life-threatening and chronic illnesses, and developmental disabilities.
About the NICUUI Stead Family Children's Hospital is home to Iowa's only Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), providing innovative, comprehensive, high-quality care to approximately 900 babies each year. Our NICU is annually ranked among the top NICUs in the country and has grown to 88 beds with the opening of UI Stead Family Children's Hospital.
Requirements- Current RN license from the State of Iowa is required.
- Current ARNP license from the State of Iowa is required.
- Physician Assistant (PA): Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners, including graduation from an accredited PA education program and/or certification by the NCCPA.
- 1 to 3 years current Neonatology and/or Pediatric RN experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
- Demonstrated job-related experience with and/or commitment to diversity in the work/academic environment is required.
- Demonstrated Level III/VI NICU experience.
- Demonstrated clinical excellence through published articles and/or clinical presentations.
- Demonstrated experience providing overall medical care and medical management for patients in an inpatient setting.
- Demonstrated experience exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided.
- Demonstrated experience managing length of stay, improving resource utilization, and decreasing costs to patients and the institution while providing personalized care.
- Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
