Job Description

The Director of Health Information Management and Coding is responsible for developing and implementing strategies related to information management, hospital and physician clinical documentation, and coding and clinical documentation improvement.

This role oversees the integrity and availability of patient information for treatment, payment, and operational purposes, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements, including HIPAA, CMS, and Joint Commission.

The Director leads a large team of professionals to manage and maintain efficient coding processes, as well as HIM operations throughout the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee consistency in operational processes, compliance with policies and regulations, and outcomes across Health Information Systems, Hospital and Physician Coding, and Clinical Documentation Improvement.
  • Ensure compliance for consistent quality coding at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
  • Collaborate with the IS&T Department to identify and implement appropriate technology and workflow to support daily operations, improve efficiency, and key performance indicators.
  • Monitor unbilled accounts and denial trends to ensure that records are completed and accounts are coded in a timely manner and within established benchmarks.
  • Develop and implement strategic process improvements to support organizational goal attainment.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 7 years of Health Information Management leadership experience in a multi-hospital health system.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Record Administration, Health Information Management, or related healthcare field.
  • Active RHIA or RHIT certification required.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements, including HIPAA, CMS, and Joint Commission.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of complete and accurate documentation, as well as coding and billing practices in all healthcare settings and for all healthcare disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MBA or MHA degree.
  • Active CHPC or CHPS credential.
  • Knowledge and experience managing coding and/or auditing both hospital and physician services.
  • Experience with a hospital clinical documentation improvement program.
  • Hands-on experience with EPIC.
