Overview:
The Manufacturing Automation Development Engineering team is in search of a dedicated Controls Engineer to play a pivotal role in the creation and enhancement of innovative automation systems and assembly lines.

Key Responsibilities:
The Controls Engineer will collaborate with a team of manufacturing and mechanical design engineers to formulate machine and process concepts. Responsibilities include:

  • Designing a resilient system architecture to support concepts, followed by the development of electrical and pneumatic schematics.
  • Programming control components such as PLCs, safety devices, HMIs, servo drives, process hardware, and robots, from initial power-on through debugging to fine-tuning and validation.
  • Engaging with cross-functional teams throughout the product and process lifecycle, ensuring close collaboration with product design, quality assurance, production, and maintenance teams.

Specific Duties:
As part of the role, the Controls Engineer will:

  • Participate in the initial conceptual development of equipment, balancing product specifications, process control needs, layout complexity, cost, quality, and lead-time constraints.
  • Implement reliable safety systems compliant with ANSI/RIA 15.06 and OSHA standards for safeguarding high-volume manufacturing equipment.
  • Architect, write, and debug PLC logic, focusing on code organization, structure, documentation, maintainability, and reusability.
  • Develop programs for subsystems, including robots, vision systems, test equipment, and manufacturing execution systems.
  • Contribute to the creation and release of Tesla specifications and standards, including vendor communication and technical evaluations.
  • Select and size electrical and electromechanical components, ensuring compliance with relevant standards.
  • Create user-friendly HMI screens for complex machinery, facilitating troubleshooting.
  • Design and layout industrial electrical control panels that meet NFPA 79, NEC, and UL 508A standards, along with generating electrical, pneumatic, and fluid schematics.
  • Oversee the assembly of electrical cabinets, field wiring, and pneumatic and fluid plumbing.
  • Introduce automated processes into production and provide training to maintenance and production teams post-deployment.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Expertise in standard and safety PLC programming (Allen Bradley Studio 5000 or Beckhoff TwinCAT 3 preferred; Siemens TIA Portal is a plus).
  • Proficiency in script-based programming languages (Python, Go, SQL).
  • Experience in robot programming (Kuka or ABB preferred; Fanuc is a plus).
  • Knowledge of servo system commissioning (Rockwell Kinetix or Beckhoff Drive Manager 2 preferred; Siemens SIMATIC is a plus).
  • Familiarity with 2D/3D vision system programming (Cognex Insight or LMI Gocator preferred; Keyence XGX is a plus).
  • A strong understanding of equipment safety standards (ANSI/RIA 15.06 and OSHA compliant) and electrical standards (NFPA 79, NEC, UL 508A).
  • A degree in Mechatronics, Electrical, Mechanical, or Computer Science Engineering, or equivalent experience.
