CPS Family Based Safety Services Specialist

Job Summary:
As a CPS Family Based Safety Services Worker, you will play a critical role in protecting children from abuse and neglect by providing supportive services to families in need. This is a challenging yet rewarding position that requires strong communication and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work effectively with families, law enforcement, and other community resources.
Key Responsibilities:
• Respond quickly and effectively in crisis situations to ensure the safety of children.
• Provide time-limited in-home services to families, identifying areas of need and developing treatment plans to minimize risk and promote safety.
• Assess child safety and take necessary actions to protect children, including removing them from their family if necessary.
• Interact objectively with families, discussing sensitive issues such as income, money management, and personal relationships.
• Help families identify resources and community support available to them, empowering them to make positive changes.
• Assist parents in recognizing behaviors that lead to child abuse and neglect, and empower them to make necessary behavioral changes.
• Determine the best course of action to remove or reduce an immediate threat to a child's safety, including working with families to identify safe caregivers, testifying in court, and referring families for crisis intervention therapy or other community resources.
• Gather family and kinship information to support children in placement, if necessary.
• Document all relevant information gathered during investigations and complete required forms accurately and in a timely manner.
• Work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to meet the needs of families and children.
• Maintain a balance of objectivity and empathetic understanding when engaging with families in stressful and crisis situations.
• Develop and maintain effective working relationships with law enforcement, judicial officials, legal resources, medical professionals, and other community resources.
• Attend and participate in trainings, meetings, and staffings to stay up-to-date on best practices and policies.
• Perform other duties as assigned to maintain unit operations.
• Promote and demonstrate respect for cultural diversity and competency among coworkers and all work-related contacts.
• Attend work regularly in accordance with agency leave policy.
Requirements:
• Knowledge of child development and family dynamics.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Problem-solving skills and the ability to operate a personal computer.
• Ability to travel and attend child and family visits, as well as other work-related appointments and meetings.
• Ability to work in an emotion-filled environment and conduct home visits in isolated or high-crime areas, with exposure to substandard and unsanitary living conditions.
• Ability to be on call on a rotating basis and work irregular hours.
