Staff Pathologist Job Description

The Department of Veteran Affairs seeks a highly skilled Staff Pathologist to provide diagnostic services within our Department of Pathology. As a key member of our team, you will have the opportunity to subspecialize in areas such as dermatopathology or hematopathology, depending on your training and interests.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Diagnostic Interpretation: As the AC/CP pathologist, you will be responsible for the diagnostic interpretation of specimens processed within our laboratory, ensuring accurate and timely results.
  • Training and Education: The AP/CP pathologist will provide guidance and support to residents and trainees on specimen processing and evaluation, helping to develop the next generation of pathologists.
  • Gross Specimen Review: You will review gross specimens to ensure accurate diagnosis and provide detailed reports to our clinical team.
  • Intraoperative Frozen Sections: You will process and interpret intraoperative frozen sections, providing critical information to our surgical teams.
  • Consultation and Collaboration: You will provide intraoperative and intraprocedural consultation as requested, working closely with our clinical teams to ensure accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
  • Surgical Pathology Specimens: You will interpret and sign-out surgical pathology specimens within CAP guidelines for turnaround time, ensuring timely and accurate results.
  • Multi-Disciplinary Conferences: You will participate in multi-disciplinary conferences such as Tumor Board, Chest Conference, and GI Conference, collaborating with our clinical teams to develop effective treatment plans.
  • Autopsy Coverage: You will review clinical history and medical records for autopsy coverage, discussing findings with our clinical team to ensure accurate consent documentation.
  • Autopsy Performance: You will perform autopsies, issue preliminary autopsy findings, and complete autopsy reports with clinicopathologic correlation within 30 days of autopsy.
  • Hematology Fluids: You will review hematology fluids and issue diagnostic interpretations, providing critical information to our clinical teams.
  • Sub-Specialty Expertise: You will be responsible for diagnostic expertise and sign-out in areas for which you have completed sub-specialty fellowship training.
  • Other Duties: You will perform all other duties as assigned by our department leadership.
