ABOUT THE POSITION

The Animal Services Department is in search of a Veterinary Surgeon to serve multiple locations.

This role encompasses a variety of responsibilities, including spay/neuter procedures in both clinic and mobile settings, performing various small animal surgeries, and overseeing the medical care of impounded animals. Ideal candidates will possess experience in shelter medicine and high-volume spay/neuter practices (training is available for enthusiastic individuals interested in this area). The primary focus will be on conducting sterilization surgeries (25-40 per day) on shelter animals and privately owned pets, with additional opportunities to perform soft tissue or orthopedic surgeries aimed at enhancing the quality of life and adoptability of shelter animals.

Alongside surgical duties, the Veterinarian will conduct examinations, formulate, and supervise treatment plans for sick and injured shelter animals.

Additionally, the Veterinarian will lead a team of registered veterinary technicians, animal care staff, and clerical support personnel, ensuring effective management of contagious disease control, medical care, and the overall welfare of individual animals and the shelter population. EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

1. Conduct physical examinations, preventive care, diagnostics, and treatments on various animal species.

2. Utilize appropriate medical equipment to perform sterilization and other necessary surgeries on animals; administer anesthesia and/or medications as required.

3. Administer immunizations to animals for disease control purposes.

4. Perform post-mortem examinations on various animals to diagnose and document pathological findings for animal cruelty cases and to ensure community health.

5. Maintain control over medicinal and surgical supplies.

6. Supervise staff to ensure clinic operations are performed effectively; instruct and train paraprofessional staff in proper animal care and treatment, including euthanasia procedures.

7. Assign and review the work of subordinate staff; respond to inquiries from the public and department employees regarding the health and medical conditions of impounded animals.

8. Maintain detailed and accurate medical records for individual animals; prepare reports and correspondence as necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited veterinary school with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.

Knowledge of: Modern veterinary medicine principles and practices, particularly regarding small animal treatment; methods for examining and preparing animals for surgery; laws and regulations governing animal care and treatment.

Ability to: Administer medical treatment and perform surgeries on animals; diagnose animal diseases; interact tactfully and effectively with the public; prepare necessary correspondence, records, and reports.

Physical Exposures: This position may involve exposure to animal odors, dander, excrement, fluids/wounds, and aggressive animals.

The Veterinary Surgeon may assist with euthanasia and lifting animals for disposal and impounding.

License: A valid license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of California is required. (An applicant lacking a valid license may be appointed provided they acquire it within 12 months of hire.)

Possession of a valid California Driver's License is also required.
