The Language and Communication Specialist is responsible for delivering preventive, evaluative, and corrective services for students facing challenges in language, speech, voice, and fluency. These services aim to support children in achieving their academic objectives. The Specialist oversees the development and implementation of the district's program that aligns with local educational speech-language objectives.

Qualifications:

  • Valid teaching certification with relevant endorsement/certification (mandatory)
  • At least three (3) years of successful experience in an educational or administrative role (preferred)
  • Master's Degree in Speech Pathology (SLP)
  • Strong organizational, planning, and coordination abilities required
  • Capability to conduct research and effectively communicate findings
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines required
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with the public and district personnel
  • Demonstrated understanding of child development, effective instructional strategies, assessment, and research related to learning
Responsibilities:
  • Conducts screenings for speech, language, and hearing
  • Evaluates and interprets data to provide recommendations for speech-language services
  • Communicates findings to IEP team members
  • Prepares comprehensive evaluation summaries
  • Develops Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) tailored to the specific needs of students in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
  • Schedules interventions utilizing various service models, including classroom support, consultation, and pull-out services as necessary to accommodate student needs in the least restrictive environment
  • Collaborates with educational staff, including teachers and psychologists, to effectively address student needs
  • Maintains documentation of the speech-language program and generates periodic reports as required
  • Ensures confidentiality of student records
  • Accurately completes documentation for third-party reimbursements in a timely manner
  • Adheres to established regulations, laws, and ethical standards
  • Demonstrates knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local regulations
  • Follows established lines of authority within professional standards
  • Participates in student intervention teams and IEP teams as appropriate
  • Collaborates with local education agencies and community programs to provide comprehensive services
  • Engages in committees related to curriculum development and speech-language initiatives
  • Administers both formal and informal assessments, including ongoing and curriculum-based evaluations
  • Observes students in educational settings
  • Collects additional diagnostic information from relevant sources for speech-language purposes
  • Provides information regarding speech, language, and hearing programs to parents and teachers
  • Delivers presentations to school personnel about language and speech disorders and their implications for literacy and communication skills
  • Offers guidance to parents and educators on speech, language, and hearing development
  • Conducts workshops and provides public information to community organizations and allied professionals as appropriate
  • Supervises paraprofessionals, aides, volunteers, and other professionals as necessary
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of personnel assigned to the speech-language program
  • Manages and implements therapy sessions
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the Arkansas Standard Course of Study in managing communicative disorders
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers in addressing speech-language disorders
  • Plans and implements evidence-based interventions suitable for individual and group needs
  • Selects and applies evidence-based practices that align with the goals of the speech and language program, ensuring the most appropriate service delivery model for each student's severity level
  • Utilizes systematic and evidence-based methods to enhance communicative competence
  • Manages facilities, materials, and equipment, including assistive technology, necessary for service delivery
  • Adjusts intervention strategies based on student performance
  • Promotes positive interpersonal relationships with students
  • Complies with local, state, and federal regulations and ethical practices
  • Engages in ongoing professional development related to speech-language and education, serving as a consultant to parents, teachers, and other relevant personnel
  • Collaborates with teachers, parents, and external agencies to meet the communication needs of students
  • Recommends and refers students for audiological, medical, and related services as needed
  • Works collaboratively with other health professionals (e.g., physicians, therapists) as appropriate
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the superintendent or designated authority
