Job Summary

The Civil Engineering Designer position at Urban Design Consulting Engineers (UDCE) involves assisting in civil engineering and stormwater design, as well as the submission of construction documents. Under the supervision of the Civil Engineering / Stormwater (CE/SW) Service Line Manager, the Engineering Designer will communicate thoroughly with project management and design teams while developing an understanding of site development and stormwater management principles in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and Manage Construction Documents: Design and prepare construction documents, including plans, specifications, and estimates, and manage the application packages and submittals, including progress tracking and regular follow-ups.
  • Design and Prepare Engineering Drawings: Create and modify engineering drawings, exhibits, and schematics using CAD software, and translate general direction and simple sketches from senior engineers into detailed design criteria, progressing through all stages of design.
  • Perform Grading Design and Site Development: Perform grading design, surface modeling, and site development for urban facilities, including driveway access, parking lots, curb ramps, surface drainage, underdrains, bioretention swales, and foundations, and apply knowledge of ADA CBC code related to site development projects.
  • Conduct Site Assessments: Conduct site assessments to develop site layout, grading, drainage, and utility plans, and collaborate with other members of the design team to develop and refine project design concepts.
  • Provide Technical Support: Provide technical support to project managers and other team members, and create project documentation, including markups, spreadsheets, etc., as assigned by project managers.
  • Ensure Project Deliverables: Ensure project deliverables meet scope, schedule, and budget requirements, and build and maintain positive and productive relationships with all internal and external staff and team members.
  • Accurately Record Project Hours: Accurately record project hours in the project management and billing platform Ajera for time tracking and billing.
Requirements
  • Education and Experience: BS in Civil Engineering plus 3-5 years of relevant engineering experience or equivalent work experience, and Engineering-in-Training (EIT) preferred.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Proficiency in reading and interpreting construction documents, experience with Civil 3D, Vehicle Tracking, with an understanding of advanced surface modeling capabilities, proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, skilled knowledge of Bluebeam, and fluent professional communication skills.
Additional Information

Expected hours of work: 8:00AM to 5:00PM (PST), M-F, unless otherwise arranged in advance. Travel: Willing to travel within the Bay Area for periodic site visits to assess conditions and gather data.
