Position: Assistant Attorney General

The mission of the Department of Law is to provide exemplary legal representation to the agencies, officers, and employees of state government in Georgia. The Department is structured into the Executive Office, five legal divisions, four specialty units, and an operations division. This position will specifically serve within the Regulated Public Interests section of the Regulated Industries and Professions Division.

Job Overview:

Attorneys in this section deliver legal counsel and representation to various state entities, including the Office of Health Planning, the Georgia Public Service Commission, the Access to Medical Cannabis Commission, and the Insurance Commissioner. Responsibilities include representing the State in antitrust litigation and defending agency decisions during appeals. The role also involves advising on the implementation of state laws and regulations related to medical cannabis and managing cases concerning the liquidation of insolvent insurance companies.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Litigate cases in administrative hearings and state and federal courts.

2. Conduct legal research and prepare necessary pleadings, motions, and briefs.

3. Attend depositions and collaborate with expert witnesses.

4. Engage in settlement negotiations.

5. Draft and respond to discovery requests.

6. Provide legal advice and representation to clients/agencies; prepare memoranda of advice.

7. Stay updated on relevant legal issues and developments.

8. Participate in multistate working groups.

9. Review opportunities for letters, comments, and briefs.

10. Draft formal opinions in response to legal inquiries.

11. Respond to inquiries from citizens and legislators.

12. Attend necessary meetings and seminars.

13. Perform additional related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited law school and membership in the Georgia Bar.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates who possess:

  • Strong writing skills.
