Overview
This role is part of the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), offering a reimbursement initiative for student loan payments.

Applicants must fulfill specific eligibility criteria in line with VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within the designated timeframe following their appointment.

Approval, the amount awarded (up to $200,000), and the eligibility duration (ranging from one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after a thorough evaluation of the EDRP application.

Essential Qualifications

Fundamental Requirements:
Citizenship
Must be a citizen of the United States
(Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not feasible to recruit qualified candidates as per VA Handbook 5005, Part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g.) Proficiency in English
Radiologic Technologists must demonstrate proficiency in both spoken and written English as mandated by 38 U.S.C
7402(d), and 7407(d)
Certification
All candidates must hold certification in general radiologic technology from the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R)
Advanced ARRT certification is necessary for roles that involve computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable.
Advanced certification signifies that the individual [can operate independently] and has exhibited specific clinical competency in the relevant specialty and has successfully completed the designated examination.
For modalities requiring advanced certification, technologists lacking such certification may receive on-the-job training under the supervision of a certified radiologic technologist.
Education
Completion of a full-time training program lasting at least 24 months (or its equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, validated by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or other recognized accrediting agencies by the Department of Education (DOE).
Computed Tomography (CT)
This specialized modality necessitates in-depth knowledge of cross-sectional human anatomy and its application in spiral and/or multi-slice computed tomography, including 3-D reconstruction scans, biopsies, and peripheral vascular examinations.
The technologist must possess specific knowledge and training regarding the location, appearance, and function of various major and minor systems susceptible to radiological illumination; accurately interpret examination requests; comprehend the functioning and inter-relationship of various organs; utilize methods and techniques to identify organs appearing on digital displays or film, and assess the acceptability of images and/or scans for diagnostic purposes while emphasizing critical aspects for the physician.
DRT assignments involving independent duties in this subspecialty require advanced ARRT certification.

Grade Determinations:
In addition to the basic employment requirements, the following criteria must be satisfied when determining the grade assignment of candidates: Senior Radiologic Technologist, (GS-10) Experience
A minimum of one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-09) directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies outlined at that level.
Senior Radiologic Technologist
Employees are trained to operate in one or more challenging and complex modalities, performing procedures related to these modalities alongside general diagnostic procedures.
At this grade level, any assignment in a single modality must exhibit significant complexity.
Such assignments are unique, potentially requiring expert specialization in complex areas of radiologic technology, Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) regulations, and intermediate QM type duties within the program.
The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs: Knowledge of radiation protection standards, devices, and techniques, including concepts of accumulated dosage, dose monitoring, and genetic changes.
Ability to utilize advanced imaging software that supports complex imaging programs and recognize changes in equipment and procedures that might lead to increased exposures, along with the ability to recommend methods to prevent such exposures.
Knowledge of basic physics, including concepts of energy, electric power, magnetic fields, and properties of x-ray, to understand the operation of the equipment.
Knowledge and skill in positioning patients for a wide variety of highly complex imaging (CT, MRI, IR, ultrasound, mammography) studies.

Key Responsibilities:
Major duties include but are not limited to: Conducting a range of routine to complex CT examinations, including but not limited to scans of the head, neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis, and extremities, as well as vascular, musculoskeletal, and cardiac imaging.
Performing routine, urgent, emergent, or research studies and post-processing of images.
Ensuring images are accurately identified with patient demographics and verifying archiving on PACS.
Adhering to contrast policy.
Assisting with CT-guided interventional procedures as needed, including but not limited to biopsies, drains, aspirations, and injections.
Demonstrating knowledge of cross-sectional human anatomy and physiology, along with medical terminology.

Proficient in imaging algorithms, technical factor selection and adjustments, and post-processing for each type of scanner. Identifying and preparing patients using two (2) patient identifiers, preparing them for exams, explaining procedures, assisting in patient movement to and from the exam table, positioning the patient, and setting up and adjusting all imaging equipment.

Evaluating the nature of critical and emergent procedures and adjusting priorities accordingly.
Performing venipuncture with appropriate intravenous catheter selection for contrast administration.
Maintaining competency with loading, programming, and using power injectors.
Identifying and initiating treatment for extravasation of IV contrast.
Recognizing signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction to intravenous contrast and being able to initiate an appropriate response.
Conducting post-processing reconstructions when requested or as part of standard procedures.
Maintaining yearly competencies, including optimization of CT protocols, radiation safety, and Image Wisely training.
Participating in the training of new employees in the section in accordance with established procedures and practices.

As needed, the technologist will perform a variety of routine diagnostic radiographic procedures, either with stationary or portable x-ray equipment, producing quality images while ensuring proper radiation safety, correct annotation, orientation, and markers.

Delivering high-quality images while minimizing patient dose and reducing costs.

Work Schedule:

Compensation:
Competitive salary with regular salary increases
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time off per year, 13 days of sick leave, and 11 paid Federal holidays annually.

Parental Leave:

After 12 months of employment, eligible for up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.


Child Care Subsidy:

After 60 days of employment, full-time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may qualify for a childcare subsidy of up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children, with a monthly maximum of $416.66.
