POSITION STATUS: Regular, Full-Time

REPORTS TO: Program Specialist

The Early Head Start/Child Care Partnership is a federally funded initiative aimed at delivering high-quality child care alongside comprehensive Early Head Start services for children aged 0-3 years, preparing them for preschool, Head Start, and formal education in public schools. The Early Head Start/Child Care Partnership Teacher is responsible for implementing the Head Start Program Performance Standards, adhering to the Head Start Act, and complying with all relevant federal and state licensing regulations. This role requires meeting all educational qualifications and training requirements for Early Head Start Teachers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Exhibit a professional demeanor, demonstrating reliability and a commitment to high standards.
  • Ensure adherence to all applicable federal and state regulations, including the Head Start Program Performance Standards, the Head Start Act, and the Child & Adult Care Food Program, as well as Kawerak agency policies.
  • Collaborate with the Teaching Team to design and implement a daily activity schedule that encompasses child health and safety, nutrition, early childhood development, mental health, and family engagement to address the individual developmental needs of children.
  • Engage with parents and staff to create tailored activities that cater to children's specific needs.
  • Conduct and document observations, screenings, and assessments, completing required student checkpoints.
  • Proactively prepare developmentally appropriate classroom materials and lesson plans that incorporate Native culture, heritage, and language; regularly update learning centers to foster child development.
  • Maintain constant supervision of children, ensuring a teacher-to-student ratio of one to four.
  • Foster ongoing communication with families, integrating educational goals that are age-appropriate.
  • Oversee Family Style Dining during all meals, ensuring compliance with CACFP and Infant Feeding Guidelines.
  • Facilitate daily gross motor activities.
  • Conduct two home visits and two parent-teacher conferences annually.
  • Collaborate with speech and physical therapists, nurses, social workers, and other professionals to enhance service quality for children.
  • Utilize appropriate guidance techniques aligned with early childhood education best practices.
  • Participate in meetings and training sessions with staff, parents, community partners, and other professionals as necessary.
  • Maintain updated confidential files for children and secure parent signatures.
  • Attend meetings and keep records of Individual Family Service Plans (IFSP) or Individual Education Plans (IEP), assisting in the coordination of ongoing services for children.
  • Communicate with parents through monthly memos, newsletters, and activity calendars.
  • Work collaboratively with classroom colleagues, core staff specialists, and assigned family advocates to support children and families.
  • Read and respond to work-related emails to ensure effective communication with colleagues.
  • Complete and submit all required reports and paperwork to the central office in a timely manner.
  • Ensure the health and safety of all children in care, adhering to procedures regarding diapering, toileting, hand washing, suspected child abuse and neglect, illness, and communicable disease policies.
  • Share responsibilities for the cleanliness and minor maintenance of the facility and outdoor play areas.
  • Develop and update an annual professional development plan to fulfill education and training requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Specialist or designee.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or GED with a current Infant Toddler Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or educational equivalency. If lacking a CDA credential or educational equivalency, a professional development plan must be established to submit a CDA application within one year of hire.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
  • Experience working with young children is preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills are essential.
  • Completion of a work physical is required upon hire and every five years thereafter.
  • Current First Aid and Pediatric CPR certification is necessary; if not current, certification must be obtained within six weeks of hire.
  • A current State of Alaska Food Worker's Card is required; if not held, it must be obtained within two weeks of hire.
  • Preference will be given to residents of the community.
  • This position is subject to the Alaska Barrier Crimes Act and the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, requiring a background check clearance, including fingerprints.
