Fire Support Specialist Job Description

**Overview**

As a Fire Support Specialist in the Army National Guard, you will play a critical role in supporting infantry and tank units in combat operations. You will be responsible for providing intelligence and relaying information to artillery units, using your expertise to determine target locations and assist in preparing and distributing fire support plans.

**Key Responsibilities**

* Establish, maintain, and operate communications equipment to facilitate communication between units
* Operate laser range finders to determine target locations
* Encode and decode messages to ensure secure communication
* Assist in preparing and distributing fire support plans
* Determine target locations using computers or manual calculations

**Helpful Skills**

* Physical and mental fitness to perform under pressure
* Ability to multitask

**Career Opportunities**

As a Fire Support Specialist, you will have the opportunity to develop valuable skills in computer consulting, information technology support, or data processing. With experience, you will be able to supervise and train other Soldiers, prepare observer target lists, initiate suppressive fire, and select and man observation posts.

**Training and Development**

You will receive 10 weeks of Basic Training, followed by 6 weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT), where you will learn hands-on and classroom skills, including decisively computing target locations, proper ammunition handling techniques, system operations, and artillery tactics.
