About the Role:

Flagship Ventures is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Associate Director, Characterization to join our team. This individual will play a key role in shaping our physical sciences characterization efforts, leading a team of scientists and engineers, and developing new characterization methods to meet throughput and quality specifications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of scientists and engineers across all characterization efforts
  • Troubleshoot workflows and instruments related to characterization efforts
  • Develop new characterization methods that meet throughput and quality specifications
  • Contribute to the ideation of new scientific campaigns in an effort to bring new materials for sustainability into the world
  • Execute characterization steps in scientific campaigns
  • Work closely with Product Managers to design ideal characterization workflows, and clearly communicate characterization results
  • Provide expertise to Product Managers to support the development of target product profiles, updating characterization capabilities as needed to deliver product candidates
  • Collaborate with Synthesis, Testing, Software, ML, and Automation/Engineering teams to ensure data flow from all characterization capabilities
  • Collaborate with Physical Sciences leadership to identify consultants to support new capability builds
  • Project management the build of experiment capabilities and their deployment in science campaigns
  • Manage characterization CAPEX including vendor relationships and budget requests
  • Assist in characterization strategy and planning for new and existing automated and autonomous workflows with deep integration of AI

Requirements:

  • Organized with strong project management skills
  • Data focused with experience dominated by experimental knowledge and a leaning towards data science and computation
  • Experience with XRD, SEM, EDS, TGA, DSC, XRF
  • Experience with data science and visualization
  • Experience working with multiple material types
  • Demonstrated innovation in characterization methods to increase scientific value of experiment workflows
  • Strong background in chemistry and physics of solid-state materials

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience interfacing with computational materials science
  • Background in signal processing and uncertainty quantification
