Job Summary

As the Director of Security, you will lead the security and physical access programs at the University of Maryland Medical System's Downtown Campus. You will develop and oversee departmental policies, procedures, and quality and safety standards to provide a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic security management plan, aligning with the UMMS mission, vision, and values.
  2. Serve as a liaison with internal and external healthcare security leaders, coordinating security efforts with local, state, and federal law enforcement and security agencies.
  3. Assure patient, employee safety and security, and visitor access in accordance with institutional policies and procedures and governmental/accreditation regulations.
  4. Oversee daily operations of the security department, ensuring effective operations and providing expertise in visitor control, access procedures, security screening, and state-of-the-art technologies.
  5. Develop and recommend department operating budgets, managing resources according to approved budgets and monitoring departmental expenditures for fiscal responsibility and accountability.
  6. Formulate and implement training programs for security and Medical System staff, preparing and conducting orientation and training classes, and coordinating presentations and in-service training with other departments and outside agencies.
  7. Direct investigatory services for the UMMC and related entities, conducting criminal and incident investigations and working collaboratively with the Department of Human Resources to conduct background investigations on prospective employees.
  8. Create various daily/weekly/monthly system reports, such as statistical information, trend analysis, and quality assurance, for administrative review.
  9. Supervise the performance of Security personnel, including hiring, firing, disciplining, training, and development, and performance review.
Requirements

Bachelor's degree in a related field required; Master's degree preferred. 10 years of progressively responsible professional experience in security, or equivalent, is required, including 5 years of supervisory experience. Healthcare experience is preferred.

Completion of a CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) course on Non-Violent Crisis Intervention is required within one year of hire or placement into the position.

Excellent knowledge of security standards associated with The Joint Commission accreditation, and MOSHA and OSHA guidelines is highly preferred. Proficiency in conducting data analysis and reporting statistics, and exceptional interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills are required to work effectively with all levels of hospital personnel and outside agencies.
