Packaging Engineer

As a Packaging Engineer at BJ's Wholesale Club, you will play a critical role in developing packaging solutions for our Own Brand products. You will work closely with a cross-functional team to execute a roadmap of projects that drive top and bottom-line growth. Your primary responsibility will be to design and implement primary and secondary packaging solutions that protect product quality, minimize waste, and optimize product cost.
Key Responsibilities:- Partner with the Own Brand Manager to understand business strategies and implement packaging solutions in collaboration with suppliers.
- Conduct technical and competitive benchmarking to define critical vs optional packaging attributes and engineer the right quality at the best cost.
- Develop a roadmap of opportunities for quality engineering to deliver value to members and profitability for BJ's. Identify and validate package materials and suppliers through the development process and provide feedback to suppliers.
- Collaborate with suppliers to document packaging specifications for each product in our portfolio.
- Enhance and validate package components and packaging processes to ensure packaging maintains integrity throughout the supply chain.
- Evaluate, recommend, develop, and implement packaging materials/systems based on multiple factors and influence.
- Establish sustainability standards for packaging that support waste and cost reduction.
- Influence the Own Brand cross-functional team with a strong understanding of interactions among product, processes, and packaging to deliver consistent and strong product quality.
- Validate packaging quality achieves specifications through the commercialization phase of product development in partnership with suppliers to deliver high-quality products for members.
- Partner with external suppliers and internal cross-functional teams to identify, develop, trial, and commercialize new packaging formats for current and innovative Own Brand products.
- Monitor and manage ongoing packaging quality to ensure products remain competitive and initiate continuous improvement projects when opportunities arise.
- Bachelor's Degree - preferred in Packaging Engineering.
- 5-15 years' experience in a retail owned brand or consumer packaged goods R&D/packaging team.
- Food, personal care, and/or household packaging development experience - including understanding of cost drivers, quality management, and technical feasibility.
- Track record of driving exceptional results in a cross-functional environment.
- Working knowledge of product manufacturing (CPG experience desired).
- Strong curiosity, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills.
- Outstanding communication and collaboration skills - thrives in a team environment.
- Project management skills.
- Exceptional prioritization ability focused on delivering against most important outcomes.
- Knowledgeable about packaging design for logistics/warehousing optimization.
- In-depth knowledge of packaging, material compatibility, and technologies related to development, testing, and implementation of new product packaging and delivery systems.
