We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Deputy to join our team at the Hays County Government Center. As a Deputy, you will play a critical role in maintaining law and order, ensuring the safety and security of our citizens, and upholding the laws of the State of Texas and Hays County.

Key Responsibilities
  • Enforce all civil and criminal laws of the State of Texas and Hays County
  • Protect the life and property of citizens and visitors to the Hays County Government Center
  • Conduct security screenings of visitors using metal detectors, x-ray machines, and physical scans
  • Collect and secure unauthorized firearms and other prohibited articles
  • Document activities for succeeding shift briefings
  • Conduct head counts of inmates in holding cells and maintain constant vigilance for unusual or questionable activity
  • Assist other officers as needed and enter data into inmate classification files
  • Create, update, and maintain various electronic lists, documents, and forms
  • Resolve disputes involving inmates, citizens, and staff
  • Catalog and process evidence to ensure the chain of custody is followed
  • Research cases and dispositions
  • Routinely inspect building security equipment and perform a variety of duties to maintain order and security in the courtroom
  • Enforce courtroom rules of behavior and respond to emergency situations
  • Provide first aid, CPR, and AED when necessary and give directions and provide escort to customers in need
  • Provide security escorts to County employees who have money-handling authority
  • Interview, investigate, and document incidents in accordance with policy
  • Monitor radio traffic of all Security Officers and assure the services delivered by the Sheriff's Office meet quality and timeliness standards
  • Enforce the civil and criminal laws of Texas and respond to, investigate, and prepare related reports on complaints
  • Testify in courts as needed and maintain fleet vehicle and equipment issued
  • Assist detectives and supervisors as needed and take and prepare reports from witnesses, victims, and suspects
  • Prevent crime in the community through public education and resource information
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Prior Peace Officer experience preferred
  • Ability to maintain continuing education requirements as outlined by TCOLE
  • Must successfully complete and pass the Hays County Sheriff's Office Field Training Program (modified)
  • TCOLE Basic Jailer license within one year of accepting position
  • Must obtain TCOLE Court Security Certification (SB42) within one year of assignment to this position
  • Must be 21 years of age
  • Valid Class C Texas driver license

Part-time employees who work less than 30 hours per week over the course of a year receive some benefits on a pro-rated basis.
