Purpose

The Middle School Science Teacher serves as an Advisor, Science Teacher, and mentor to students at the respective grade level and subject area. This role requires a passion for education, a commitment to student success, and a collaborative spirit.

Qualifications and Skills
  • Experience: 3+ years of experience as a Middle School Science Teacher is desired.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Science, Science Education, or a related field; Master's degree is preferred.
  • Desirable Traits: Positive enthusiasm for working with Middle School students, experience working with students with learning differences, proficiency in educational technology, strong written and oral communication skills, and the ability to effectively collaborate with colleagues.
Essential Functions
  • Attendance and Punctuality: Regular attendance and punctuality are essential for daily interactions with students and colleagues.
  • Adherence to Policies: Adhere to all school and division policies and procedures.
  • Effective Learning Environment: Provide a clear and structured classroom environment that adheres to guidelines.
  • Instructional Skills: Utilize effective multi-sensory teaching methodologies and instructional skills based on diagnostic testing and incorporating modifications and accommodations.
  • Lesson Planning: Plan lessons and materials to implement curriculum as outlined in the curriculum guide and support new curricular programs.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records and complete all reports thoroughly and in a timely manner.
  • Communication: Communicate with students in a professional, calm, and supportive manner and serve as a student advocate.
  • Teamwork: Work effectively with other faculty, new teachers, and non-teaching staff.
  • Parent Communication: Communicate regularly with parents; respond to inquiries within 24 hours.
  • Professional Development: Attend curriculum and staff meetings, parent conferences, and complete required professional development hours annually.
  • Emergency Situations: Physically manage class in emergency situations, including fire drills, weather drills, and lockdown drills.
  • Supervision: Accompany students to various places in and out of the building, including lunch, library, special classes, gymnasium, playground, and other outdoor areas.
  • Field Trips: Chaperone students on field trips and class trips.
  • Mission Promotion: Support the mission of June Shelton School and Evaluation Center by promoting the school in a positive manner and facilitating a sense of community.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Fulfill other professional responsibilities as assigned.
Physical Requirements

See, move distances within and between buildings, lift up to 10 pounds, carry up to 10 pounds, push/pull, perceive colors (red, green, amber), hear/listen, speak clearly, and touch (dexterity, hand, and finger).

Mental/Reasoning Requirements

Read and write, analyze and comprehend, read and write complex texts, make judgments and decisions, and perform basic math skills.

Work Environment

Work alone, work with others, verbal contact with others, face-to-face contact, inside and outside, and in a noisy environment.
