Job Summary:

As a key member of The University of Akron's Exploratory Advising and Academic Support team, the Retention Specialist will play a vital role in supporting students in the Say Yes Scholarship Program and other retention initiatives. This position requires a strong commitment to student success and a passion for creating inclusive and supportive environments that foster academic achievement and personal growth.

Essential Functions:

1. Provide academic advising and life coaching to students, helping them navigate university requirements and academic/administration procedures.
2. Develop and implement student programming and assess program outcomes to ensure the success of students in the Say Yes Scholarship Program and other retention initiatives.
3. Collaborate with internal and external partners to establish and build rapport with students, faculty, and staff.
4. Supervise student staff and provide guidance and support to ensure the success of the team.

Required Qualifications:

Requires a relevant Bachelor's Degree and up to 2 years' experience in academic advising and/or counseling within an education setting and/or social service setting or related fields. Strong organizational skills and basic computer skills including word processing and database capabilities, and excellent written and verbal communication skills required. Ability to provide case management and student support services in a higher education setting preferred. Experience working with non-traditional, minority and/or first-generation populations in an educational setting required. Knowledge of and experience developing curriculum and a willingness and ability to travel for recruiting purposes and be available for evening advising required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity with campus resources and University policies and procedures preferred. One year of experience is preferred.
