The Center for Excellence in Disabilities (CED) at West Virginia University Research Corporation is currently seeking applications for the role of an Assistive Technology Specialist.
Position Overview
This role is designed to facilitate assistive technology demonstrations, training sessions, and information referrals to consumers, families, and service providers. The Specialist will also investigate policies, practices, and procedures that either support or hinder the provision of assistive technology devices and services. Additional responsibilities include conducting outreach initiatives, collaborating with various agencies, and identifying funding opportunities to enhance the assistive technology program. The Specialist will address inquiries and resolve issues of moderate complexity independently.
Key Responsibilities:
- Showcase a diverse range of assistive technology devices and services tailored to meet the needs of individuals with various disabilities, explaining their applications in daily life, recreation, education, and employment.
- Conduct clinical assessments to determine consumer needs for assistive technology.
- Deliver training and technical support to subcontractors, service providers, consumers, and agency personnel regarding disabilities and assistive technology.
- Organize exhibits and demonstrations at conferences and meetings, and present to audiences on assistive technology topics.
- Engage in research for the development and distribution of educational materials, including brochures and fact sheets, and produce informational packets on specialized topics in accessible formats.
- Respond to information requests and provide appropriate referrals to other agencies or businesses.
- Act as a liaison for collaboration with non-profit organizations, community groups, and interagency committees.
- Compile productivity and program reports for the Center's database manager and Program Manager.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A minimum of two years of experience working with individuals with disabilities or with organizations serving diverse populations, including hospitals, schools, social services, or non-profits.
- Proficiency in using specialized hardware, software, and electronic communication systems.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with a focus on detail and accuracy.
- Ability to work independently and efficiently with minimal supervision.
- Capable of effectively presenting information in various settings, including one-on-one, small groups, and larger audiences.
- Ability to quickly learn and apply academic, administrative, and organizational policies relevant to the role.
- Competence in reading and understanding instructions, correspondence, and memos.
- Ability to follow written, oral, or diagrammatic instructions effectively.
- Familiarity with programs and services available for individuals with disabilities.
- Knowledge of computer systems, including proficiency in personal computers and software applications.
- Willingness to travel to off-site locations, which may require overnight stays.
- Understanding of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Rehabilitation Act, and other relevant legislation.
Requirements:
- Valid US driver's license.
