Responsibilities

As a Preservationist in this role, the incumbent will engage in a diverse range of skilled preservation tasks utilizing various materials and tools. Responsibilities include constructing and fabricating cabinetry, furniture, and replicating or installing historic textiles. The role involves the construction and rehabilitation of wood-framed structures, furnishings, and accessories, primarily focusing on the historical and architectural integrity of all-building offices, museums, visitor centers, and workshops. Key tasks include performing carpentry work and preservation activities such as structural framing, installation of doors and windows, and the reconstruction, restoration, or rehabilitation of floors, staircases, trusses, beams, and roofing elements. The incumbent will also maintain, repair, and rebuild various surfaces and structures using materials such as brick, block, stone, and lime-based mortar, including partitions, walls, walkways, and foundations.

Employment Conditions

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Appointment is subject to a background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Compliance with the Selective Service Registration Act is required for male applicants.
  • Participation in the Direct Deposit Electronic Funds Transfer Program is mandatory.
  • The selectee may be required to operate a government or private motor vehicle as part of their official duties. Prior to operating a motor vehicle, the selectee must provide a valid State-issued driver's license and may need to submit certified driving records from all States.
  • Government housing is not available at this location.
  • Uniform compliance with National Park Service standards is required, and a uniform allowance will be provided.
  • New employees or supervisors in the Federal government must complete a one-year probationary period.
  • The ability to lift and carry items weighing 50 pounds or more is essential.
  • The role requires physical effort and may involve work at heights exceeding 35 feet.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old or at least 16 years old with specific educational qualifications.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, candidates must demonstrate sufficient knowledge and skills in the following areas:

  • Ability to perform the duties of the position with minimal supervision (SCREEN OUT)
  • Proficiency in interpreting instructions and specifications, including blueprint reading
  • Competence in using and maintaining tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, and repair
  • Familiarity with various materials
  • Technical practices, both theoretical and artistic
  • Proficiency in using measuring instruments
Candidates must provide detailed descriptions of their experience and training relevant to these job-related factors in their application. Volunteer experience, including that gained through National Service programs, will also be considered.

Education

For Wage Grade (WG) positions, there is no substitution of education for experience.
