Description
As a law enforcement officer, you will have the privilege of taking your assigned vehicle home within a 20-mile radius from the police department.
An individual in this role is responsible for executing a comprehensive range of law enforcement tasks within the patrol division. Responsibilities include monitoring the community during assigned shifts via patrol car, on foot, or by bicycle, while preventing, detecting, and investigating disturbances and criminal activities. This includes responding to traffic incidents, assisting victims, managing traffic control, apprehending suspects, and providing testimony in court. Officers must demonstrate sound judgment, initiative, and composure while performing their duties, with more complex issues typically addressed under the guidance of a Police Sergeant. The role involves regular public interaction, necessitating tact, firmness, and decisiveness. All activities are conducted in alignment with departmental policies and applicable laws, supplemented by specific instructions from superior officers. Officers face the usual risks associated with law enforcement duties and must adhere to Level III OSHA Standards concerning bloodborne pathogens. Performance is regularly assessed through observation, report reviews, and discussions regarding incident management.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct patrols in a police vehicle, on foot, or by bicycle; check premises for security; observe for unusual conditions; and report any hazardous situations.
- Respond to calls for assistance, complaints, and reports of suspicious activities; assess situations and take appropriate legal or persuasive actions.
- Investigate traffic accidents; issue citations; direct traffic; and engage in emergency operations as necessary.
- Conduct investigations into accidents and potential crimes through observation, witness interviews, and evidence collection; perform assigned investigative tasks; arrest and process suspects.
- Provide public guidance on laws and local regulations; testify in court; execute search warrants; and serve legal documents as required.
- Manage vehicular traffic during peak times or in the event of traffic signal failures or accidents; maintain order at public events.
- Facilitate funeral and bank escorts.
- Utilize a two-way radio for communication with police headquarters; operate a mobile data terminal with various software applications.
- Document activities and prepare detailed reports.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Extensive knowledge of state and federal laws, local ordinances, and police department policies, particularly regarding arrest, search and seizure, and traffic management.
- Familiarity with the application of technology in law enforcement.
- Understanding of law enforcement principles, practices, methods, and equipment.
- Basic knowledge of scientific crime detection and identification techniques.
- Proficiency in using firearms and police equipment, as well as self-defense tactics.
- Ability to resolve conflicts collaboratively.
- Effective communication skills over radio and other technologies.
- Competence in operating computer terminals.
- Capacity to exercise sound judgment in both routine and emergency scenarios.
- Aptitude for delivering effective court testimony.
- Skill in preparing clear and concise reports of activities.
- Ability to foster cooperative relationships with citizens, colleagues, other law enforcement agencies, and municipal officials.
This position requires strict adherence to all safety regulations established by the Village of Pinehurst and OSHA standards.
Physical Requirements
- Must be capable of performing essential physical tasks such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and engaging in repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
- Must possess the visual acuity necessary to operate a police vehicle and discern details while on patrol.
Graduation from high school and completion of basic law enforcement training; relevant experience is preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Possession of a valid driver's license. Certification as a law enforcement officer by the appropriate governing body is required, along with the ability to obtain any additional necessary certifications.
