POSITION SUMMARY
This role is responsible for executing welding, flame cutting, and various related tasks essential for the maintenance and repair of dredging equipment. The welder must ensure that all welding operations are performed safely and in compliance with company standards.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct welding, flame cutting, and related tasks to repair dredge components.
- Adhere strictly to permit-to-work and energy isolation protocols, including fire watch requirements.
- Submit daily counts of oxygen and acetylene bottles to management.
- Ensure all welding activities comply with company policies, class requirements, and regulatory standards.
- Maintain an accurate inventory of consumables to support repair, modification, and fabrication tasks.
- Collaborate with the Chief Engineer and other department leaders to align welding tasks with operational needs.
- Inspect welded joints for quality, penetration, and adherence to specifications.
- Perform routine inspections and maintenance on welding equipment.
- Store oxygen and acetylene bottles according to company guidelines.
- Assist with non-welding duties as necessary.
- Comply with approved dredge operating procedures and report unsafe practices to supervisors.
- Maintain cleanliness in assigned work areas.
- Utilize safety and environmental tools effectively, ensuring a tidy job site and securing tools and equipment daily.
- Engage in other related duties as assigned.
- Participate actively in safety and environmental initiatives to ensure compliance with regulations and enhance company programs.
- This position may require extended travel to remote project sites.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION
A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with a minimum of six months to one year of relevant experience or training, or a combination of experience and education that provides the necessary welding skills and knowledge.
The ideal candidate should possess:
- 1-3 years of experience in structural welding and the ability to pass a welding test at a designated facility.
- Knowledge of welding practices and materials, demonstrating proficiency in the craft.
- Familiarity with the operation of various marine equipment.
- Effective communication skills with colleagues and supervisors.
- Competencies in stress management, teamwork, and results orientation.
PREFERRED SKILLS
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The candidate must be capable of performing essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation. This includes the ability to wear and utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, life vests, respirators, ear plugs, and steel-toed shoes as required by the work environment.
Additionally, the candidate must be able to:
- Move between various locations on the job site, including varying heights.
- Stand, stoop, twist, bend, crouch, kneel, and sit for extended periods.
- Perform repetitive movements with arms, hands, and back.
- Lift and carry up to 30 lbs independently; heavier items may require assistance.
- Push and pull with a peak force of 150 lbs.
- Climb stairs and vertical ladders of 6 ft or more.
- Work in confined spaces and at elevated heights.
- Adapt to temperature changes and work in various environmental conditions.
