Job Summary

Southwest Shipyard, LP is seeking a skilled Structural Fitter to join our team. As a Structural Fitter, you will be responsible for performing structural fitting functions, including laying out, positioning, and aligning fabricated structural steel plate according to customer specifications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform structural fitter assignments as assigned.
  • Work safely and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Notify foreman or supervisor of any safety and/or structural issues as warranted.
Duties and Responsibilities

Lays out, positions, aligns and fits together fabricated structural steel plate according to customer specifications and direction from Foreman/Supervisor.

May be required to move parts into position, manually, by hoist or crane, and align parts, using jacks, etc.

May be required to remove high spots and cut bevels, using hand files, portable grinders, and/or cutting torch, as well as give directions to the welder to build up low spots or short pieces.

May, at times, be required to tack weld, as necessary.

Consults with foreman or supervisor regarding installation or repair problems, sequence of operations, and time required to complete repair and/or installation.

Attend safety meetings as required.

Maintain a safe working environment.

Requirements
  • Minimum one year experience as a structural fitter (shipyard experience preferred, but not required).
  • Be able to perform simple paperwork as required for filling out forms and logs.
Special Requirements
  • Mandatory drug testing prior to employment, and will be subject to random, unannounced drug and/or alcohol tests during employment.
  • Must be able to communicate and take directions from Foreman & Supervisor.
  • Must have good judgment skills, and a high-level work initiative.
  • Must be able to work independently, without direct supervision.
  • Must be able to meet strict attendance requirements.
Physical/Environmental Requirements

Barge chemical environment. Requires prolonged kneeling, standing, walking, twisting, climbing, and the ability to lift and carry in excess of 120 lbs, assisted.

Ability to work in varied conditions (e.g.: heat, cold, rain, ice, snow, etc.), inside and outside.

Able to work in confined space, heights and operate equipment efficiently and safely.
