About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Ophthalmic Assistant to join our team at SSM Health. As a key member of our eye care team, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional patient care and support to our patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist eye care providers in the examination and treatment of patients, ensuring accurate and timely documentation of patient information.
  • Perform various tests and procedures, including visual acuity measurement, color vision testing, and tonometry, under the supervision of licensed eye care providers.
  • Act as a scribe, documenting patient interactions and dialogue during visits, including history, exam, diagnoses, orders, and patient instructions.
  • Provide patient education and support under the direction of eye care providers, promoting patient understanding and adherence to treatment plans.
  • Assist with minor surgery procedures and laser treatments, maintaining a safe and sterile environment.
  • Inventory and maintain surgical instruments, adhering to system and department standards.
  • Screen patients for emergency situations, obtaining pertinent information for providers.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • One year of healthcare experience preferred.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) certification from the International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (IJCAHPO) or Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) required.
