Job Overview

Position Summary:

The Senior Financial Officer plays a crucial role in overseeing various accounting and financial reporting functions within the Finance Office. This position is designed for individuals looking to advance their careers within the Accounting and Finance sectors over time. Currently, the Senior Financial Officer is tasked with managing all aspects of fixed asset and debt accounting, alongside executing several general ledger accounting responsibilities. Reporting directly to the Controller, this role requires close collaboration with the Assistant Controller, Associate Vice President for Finance, and the University Budget Manager, necessitating effective interaction with a diverse range of stakeholders.

This role offers valuable insights into the financial operations of a university and presents opportunities for professional growth within the higher education sector.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the university's fixed asset accounting, which includes but is not limited to:
    • Ensuring compliance with GAAP and university policies regarding fixed assets.
    • Reconciling monthly fixed asset acquisitions with the general ledger.
    • Updating the fixed asset management system (Sage) for capital expenditures.
    • Maintaining schedules for construction in progress related to new projects and improvements.
    • Reviewing monthly expenditures for repairs and maintenance.
    • Conducting annual physical inventories of all movable equipment.
    • Tagging and entering movable asset purchases into the software system.
  • Conduct monthly reconciliations of the university's Accounts Payable bank account, ensuring that the general ledger aligns with bank information and resolving discrepancies.
  • Manage debt entries and maintain Bond documentation and Trustee deposits, including supporting invoices and statements, while preparing lead schedules and reconciling with the general ledger.
  • Reconcile State Scholarships to ensure compliance and accuracy in student records and financial ledgers.
  • Administer the abandoned property process, including reconciliations and collaboration with various departments to prepare necessary documentation.
  • Assist in the annual audit and contribute to the monthly, quarterly, and annual general ledger closing processes.
  • Engage in cross-training initiatives within the department to provide support for fellow Finance team members.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of three years of progressive experience in general ledger accounting.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with five or more years of experience in advanced spreadsheet, query tool, and financial database usage.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to engage professionally with various university constituents.
  • Proven capability to manage multiple priorities within tight deadlines and handle several projects simultaneously.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • CPA certification or a master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Experience in fixed asset accounting.
  • Familiarity with Workday Enterprise Applications.
  • Advanced proficiency in Ellucian Banner or similar enterprise applications.
  • Progressive experience in general accounting within a non-profit educational institution.
  • A proactive problem-solver with a track record of identifying and implementing business process improvements, including automation and efficiency enhancements.
