GENERAL OVERVIEW:


The dosimetrist plays a crucial role in converting prescribed radiation doses for cancer treatment into detailed, safe, and accurate plans.

Working closely with medical physicists and radiation oncologists, the dosimetrist is involved in the development and enhancement of treatment plans, providing support to radiation therapists during the treatment process.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops treatment plans utilizing both computerized and manual calculations to achieve the prescribed radiation dose while protecting critical structures, as directed by the Radiation Oncologist.
  • Identifies and delineates normal and dose-sensitive structures using images from various data sets, demonstrating proficiency in image registration with CT, MRI, and PET scans. Engages in discussions regarding treatment plan design with the radiation oncologist and medical physicist.
  • Conducts calculations to ensure the precise delivery of the prescribed dose, documenting all relevant information in the patient record, and confirming the accuracy of calculations as per the Medical Physicist's guidelines.
  • Aids in simulations and tumor localization using specified imaging technologies, including CT, MRI, and PET. Oversees or assists in the creation and implementation of compensation filters, custom shields, bolus, electron cutouts, and other beam-modifying devices. Participates in the planning and production of molds, casts, and other immobilization devices.
  • Imports patient imaging studies and localization markers for treatment planning as directed by the radiation oncologist.
  • Generates and transfers reference images and localization markers for portal verification and treatment delivery, including DRRs, CBCTs, and other IGRT methods as specified.
  • Collaborates with radiation therapists, providing guidance on the implementation of the treatment plan, including the proper use of immobilization devices, bolus, compensators, wedges, field arrangements, and other treatment parameters.
  • Educates students, radiation therapists, and residents on practical aspects of medical dosimetry. Engages in clinical research to develop and implement innovative techniques. Participates in quality improvement initiatives.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Dosimetry or a related field is required.
  • A combination of education and experience is acceptable.
  • Participation in continuing education as mandated by the MDCB is required.
  • Graduation from a JRCERT accredited Medical Dosimetry program of at least 12 months and Board certification as a Medical Dosimetrist (CMD) or eligibility to take the MDCB Examination is preferred.
