As a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), you will play a critical role in ensuring safe and healthy working conditions for workers across the country. This position is a key part of our team, responsible for monitoring State Plans and evaluating activities involving all facets of the Plan.
Key Responsibilities- Assist in conducting and/or participating in opening and closing conferences with management officials, employees, and employee representatives reviewing hazards or unsafe working conditions cited or observed.
- Conduct research and studies records and files covering mishaps, injuries, and equipment maintenance data.
- Review safety activities for evidence of compliance with prescribed safety requirements.
- Communicate with various parties at inspected worksites.
- Assist agency attorneys in the preparation of evidence supporting the agency's findings of safety and occupational health violations where the employer contests the inspection results.
- Compile and prepare a variety of recurring reports as directed by the specialist's supervisor.
- Be a U.S. Citizen.
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Candidate required to obtain the necessary security/investigation level.
- Requires a probationary period if the requirement has not been met.
- Subject to drug test prior to appointment at GS-11 and GS-12 grade levels.
- Requires a valid driver's license.
- Requires medical exam and must maintain physical requirements.
- You will be required to lift items weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- To qualify for this position, you must meet the individual occupational requirement and have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in the Federal or Private Sector.
- Specialized experience includes:
- Applying a general knowledge of OSHA or related safety and occupational health standards or codes to advise on or resolve technical matters dealing with occupational safety and health requirements.
- Analyzing or evaluating new and existing safety inspection jobs, processes, products, or other systems to determine the existence, severity, probability, and outcome of hazards.
- Inspecting or surveying workplaces, processes, products, or other systems for compliance with established safety and occupational health policies or standards and to identify potential new hazards.
You must have an undergraduate or graduate degree in a safety or occupational health field, or a related field that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.
