Position Summary:

The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is in search of a dedicated Train Dispatcher to join our operations team.

The primary responsibility of this pivotal role is to manage the dispatching of trains and on-track equipment, ensuring safe and efficient operations by issuing Main Track Authorities. Candidates must complete comprehensive training and assessments on all operational, safety, airbrake, train handling, and timetable regulations. A solid understanding of the railroad's physical characteristics is essential. Preferred candidates will have at least two years of experience in a similar operational role within the railroad industry. However, individuals demonstrating exceptional learning capabilities regarding railroad operations may also be considered. All applicants must exhibit sound judgment and the ability to maintain composure in high-pressure situations.

The Train Dispatcher's Office serves as the communication hub for the railroad, requiring excellent communication skills and proficiency in computer applications, particularly Microsoft Office. Dispatchers will relay operational information between field personnel and relevant parties using radio, telephone, and email. They are responsible for informing management of any operational delays or unusual situations and coordinating emergency services as needed. Additionally, dispatchers will compile and distribute a daily report summarizing the day's railroad activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Complete training and testing on operational, safety, airbrake, and timetable regulations.
  • Report for duty punctually, equipped with all necessary items as per regulations.
  • Adhere to Federal Railroad Administration Hours of Service regulations.
  • Utilize the railroad radio communication system following established protocols.
  • Publish, maintain, and distribute track bulletins.
  • Issue Main Track Authority to trains and maintenance crews, ensuring safe railroad operations.
  • Maintain accurate records including track authorities, bulletins, time slips, and delay reports.
  • Communicate operational information to appropriate personnel.
  • Act as a liaison between various departments and field crews.
  • Keep management informed of delays or unusual circumstances.
  • Coordinate emergency services as required.
  • Prepare daily reports detailing railroad activities.
  • Handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately.
  • Schedule relief crews and update operating schedules as necessary.
  • Maintain inventory and serviceability records of rolling stock.
  • Communicate switching requirements between departments.
  • Maintain qualifications for other operational roles as needed.
  • Facilitate maintenance of dispatch databases as required.
  • Perform additional clerical duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience with heavy equipment is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Familiarity with railroad operations is preferred, with two years in an operational role being ideal.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the railroad's physical characteristics is preferred.
  • Demonstrated sound judgment and attention to detail.
  • Able to multitask effectively and maintain focus in dynamic environments.
  • Ability to remain calm and composed under stress.
  • Works well in a team-oriented setting.
  • Must pass a physical capabilities evaluation and pre-employment drug screening.

Work Environment:

  • Must wear required personal protective equipment.
  • Work hours include 4-5 shifts per week, lasting up to 12 hours in summer and 8 hours in winter, including weekends and holidays.
  • Office environment with computer and radio communication.
  • Frequent lifting of equipment or materials up to 75 lbs.
  • Navigate safely in a railroad yard and industrial setting.
