Classification Purpose

The primary objective of this role is to safeguard individuals by monitoring and ensuring the well-being of guests at the aquatic facility.

This is a part-time role situated at the John Denson Pool. The chosen candidate will be expected to work during evenings and weekends, with potential holiday shifts as necessary. The work schedule will be adaptable based on the facility's requirements, potentially spanning from Tuesday to Friday, 10:30 AM - 6:30 PM, and Saturday from 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM. This position allows for a maximum of 29.5 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities

The following tasks are indicative of the responsibilities associated with this role. They are not listed in any order of significance. The absence of specific duties does not exclude them from this classification if the work is similar or related.

- Supervise the activities of pool visitors; implement preventive safety measures; administer emergency first aid; perform CPR; execute rescues; contact appropriate medical or emergency services when required.

- Regularly maintain cleanliness of the pool and associated facilities.

- Welcome patrons; mediate conflicts; clarify pool regulations and policies.

- Participate in training programs to enhance lifeguarding skills.

- Instruct swimming lessons for patrons.

- Manage participant registrations and operate the cash register.

- Assist with special events.

- Maintain a high level of physical fitness through mandatory training sessions.

- Document incidents accurately.

- Perform related duties as assigned.

- May operate City vehicles for work-related tasks as directed by a supervisor.

Additional Responsibilities

- Ensure the pool remains free of hazardous debris.

- Aid in the upkeep of equipment.

- Answer phone inquiries.

- Carry out other related tasks as necessary.

Minimum Requirements
  • Must possess (or be able to obtain within fourteen (14) days of hire) and maintain a valid Florida driver's license; and
  • Must hold and maintain current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training with American Red Cross CPR, AED, and First Aid or an equivalent certification: YMCA Lifeguard or Jeff Ellis Lifeguard.

    Preferred Qualifications
Minimum qualifications for education and experience must be met before consideration of the following preferred qualifications:
  • Possess the Water Safety Instructors (WSI) certification.
Communication Skills

Effectively communicates with supervisors, colleagues, other departments, contractors, vendors, outside agencies, and the public to coordinate work activities, review project statuses, exchange information, or resolve issues.
Demonstrates the ability to take preventive safety measures and provide emergency first aid, CPR, and rescues when necessary.
Capable of preparing detailed and accurate written records and reports.

Ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions and complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision.

Ability to organize, monitor, and assign daily activities.

Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with supervisors, customers, colleagues, and the general public as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Familiarity with departmental policies and procedures

- Understanding of safety protocols and procedures at the aquatic facility

- Ability to exercise judgment and identify unsafe conditions

- Capability to oversee visitor activities, greet patrons, mediate conflicts, and enforce pool rules and regulations.

- Proficient in clerical tasks such as operating a register and preparing incident reports.

- Ability to teach swimming lessons and participate in training programs.

- Commitment to maintaining cleanliness and upkeep of the pool facility regularly.
