Recycling Materials Engineer

Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is on the lookout for a Recycling Materials Engineer specializing in plastics. This role focuses on analyzing the existing value chain of mechanically recycled plastics, innovating new material technologies, and providing support for production across North and South America through collaborative efforts with various divisions including Engineering Design, Design Studios, Manufacturing, and Purchasing.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assess and analyze different mechanical recycling sources to determine their value to our supply chain, considering factors such as cost, life cycle assessment (LCA) value, production capacity, quality, and performance. Work closely with production Purchasing Teams and the Namyang Material Center to establish strategies and objectives for future material advancements.
- Formulate new polymeric compounds that incorporate recycled materials (including PP, TPO, PA, PET, PC, ABS, PU, etc.) for upcoming vehicle launches. Responsibilities include patent applications, research and development projects, enhancements in production material quality, local material qualifications, and collaboration with divisions within Hyundai Motor Group, suppliers, and the Hyundai R&D center in Namyang, South Korea.
- Identify promising new materials recycling technology initiatives with a focus on sustainability, value, and customer appeal, and manage the development of these technologies from concept to production-ready solutions. This encompasses budget management, project oversight of materials testing, development, processing evaluations, and performance assessments, along with transitioning successful projects to relevant teams.
- Conduct periodic audits of material performance against specification requirements, perform competitor benchmarking, and execute root cause analyses for quality issues reported in the field. Collaborate with assembly plants, engineering design teams, and suppliers to implement effective improvement measures.
- Oversee laboratory testing of materials, assess their performance, and guide lab technicians in testing procedures, result analysis, and reporting findings to management.
- Enhance the quality of existing production components for Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis.
- Assist in the planning and monitoring of departmental budgets.
- Prepare and deliver technical reports as required.
- Handle administrative tasks such as purchasing requests, vacation requests, and travel arrangements.
- Engage in additional projects as assigned.
- Willingness to travel up to 20% of the time, both domestically and internationally.
- Conversational proficiency in a second language is advantageous.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Material Science, Rubber or Plastic Technology, Polymer Science; other degrees may be considered based on relevant experience.
- Experience with polymeric materials, particularly in recycling, is preferred.
- Valid Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record.
- Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States, with verification of employment eligibility required at the time of hire.
