The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Radiology is looking for an Emergency Medical Technician.

GENERAL CLASS DESCRIPTION:

Under the direct supervision of a Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP), Nurse Manager, or designated personnel, the EMT will assist in providing patient care services.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support technologists and physicians during procedures in the interventional radiology department.
  • Prepare sterile trays and ensure adherence to proper sterile techniques, including skin preparation.
  • Assist in operating complex medical devices during interventional procedures, such as angioplasty devices, stents, drains, and filters.
  • Build rapport with patients and explain the examination process and requirements.
  • Work under the direct supervision of a Radiology staff physician and/or Department of Radiology Nurse Manager or designee.
  • Provide basic patient care services across various areas within the Department of Radiology, including CT, MRI, Ultrasound, Fluoroscopy, and Interventional Radiology.
  • Assist in collecting venous blood samples.
  • Implement patient care plans based on identified priorities, documenting interventions and patient/family responses.
  • Manage clinical visits for patients and support providers during these visits.
  • Collaborate with patients and families to integrate their contributions into a multidisciplinary care plan.
  • Coordinate and implement transfer and discharge planning throughout the care episode.
  • Execute nursing interventions in accordance with departmental policies and procedures to maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff, while following universal precautions.
  • Exhibit responsibility and pride in work, demonstrating flexibility in accepting assignments while maintaining a professional demeanor.
  • Adhere to policies and procedures in line with regulations from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Department of Nursing, Department of Radiology, and the Iowa Department of Public Health Paramedic Scope of Practice.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

1. Proficient in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) procedures.

2. Familiarity with medical terminology and drug classifications.

3. Understanding of common emergency medications and their applications.

4. Knowledge of institutional policies and procedures.

5. Ability to perform delegated patient care tasks.

6. Capability to transport monitored patients safely.

7. Proficient in computer usage.

8. Skills in maintaining and managing inventory.

9. Flexibility to adjust work schedules based on unit and patient needs.

10. Ability to foster effective working relationships.

11. Strong communication skills with staff, students, patients, and the public.

12. Competence in following both oral and written instructions.

13. Commitment to patient confidentiality.

14. Ability to perform under time-sensitive and high-stress conditions while maintaining composure.

15. Capability to follow through on assignments and resolve issues within the designated timeframe.

16. Ability to recognize and address errors appropriately.

17. Experience in precepting EMT and Paramedic students.

WORK SCHEDULE: 10-hour shifts with variable start times between 0700 and 0800, Monday through Friday, including potential holidays.
