Job Summary

The Medical Assistant plays a vital role in the Barton Health team, providing exceptional care to patients in a fast-paced clinic setting. As a Medical Assistant, you will work closely with the care team to ensure smooth patient flow and provide a comfortable, safe, and professional experience for all patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collect patient care data and report findings to licensed staff
  • Escort patients to exam rooms, take weight and vital signs, and obtain chief complaint/reason for visit
  • Obtain social, family, personal, and surgical history, review current medications, and document pharmacy preference, allergies, and adverse drug reactions
  • Conduct all appropriate health screenings and document fall risk
  • Perform point of care testing
  • Assist licensed staff with minor diagnostic procedures and treatments, including sterilizing and setting up instruments, preparing examination rooms and instruments, and stocking supplies
  • Provide understandable explanations and educate patients and families regarding treatments and interventions
  • Schedule patients for testing procedures
  • Obtain test results and ensure that lab reports, x-rays, outside progress notes/medical records, and other information is in the medical record prior to the appointment
  • Label and maintain proper storage for specimens and tests
  • Process requests for prescription medication refills according to protocol
  • Administer medications within scope of practice and training
  • Clean and disinfect room counters, exam tables, and instruments after each use
  • Recognize signs and symptoms of acute medical or physiological conditions and immediately report such circumstances to a registered nurse, mid-level provider, or physician
  • Document all aspects of patient care in the electronic medical record system
  • Assist with charge capture entry as needed
  • Cross train to cover other departments and flexibility to cover as needed
  • Actively participate in team huddles and care team meetings
  • Respond to the needs of the department by performing other duties as necessary
Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • College level coursework in the delivery of care in a medical clinic preferred
  • Medical Assistant certification as recognized by The Medical Board of California or a nationally recognized certification agency
  • OR completion of a Medical Assistant program including a clinical externship
  • OR one year of recent Medical Assistant experience
  • Ability to obtain certification as recognized by the Medical Board of California or a nationally recognized certification agency within 18 months of hire
Preferred Qualifications
  • One to three years' recent experience as a Medical Assistant preferred
  • Float MA positions require at least two years of recent MA experience
  • Ambulatory care/physician office experience preferred
  • Patient Centered Medical Home or Patient Centered Specialty Practice experience preferred
