Key Responsibilities of the Medication Administration Specialist

The primary duties of the Medication Administration Specialist include: 1) Administering or assisting with the administration and/or supervision of medications to residents in a safe, precise, and timely manner (in accordance with State regulations); 2) Delivering physical and emotional support to all residents while promoting dignity, choice, and individuality; and 3) Overseeing the wellness staffing schedule. The Medication Administration Specialist reports to the on-duty supervisor and the Wellness Director.

Essential Duties

  • Administers or supervises the administration of medications as per physician orders documented on the medication administration record (MAR).
  • Records medications administered on the MAR following company policies; Reviews MARs immediately after administration and before the end of the shift to ensure complete and accurate documentation.
  • Conducts shift change reports with incoming and outgoing personnel.
  • Maintains the security of the medication cart and narcotic keys throughout the shift; Performs narcotic counts at the beginning and end of each shift in line with company protocols.
  • Assists residents with daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, personal hygiene, toileting, eating, and mobility.
  • Collaborates effectively with colleagues and other team members.
  • Maintains a professional demeanor at all times when interacting with residents and their families.
  • Reports any suspected or observed instances of abuse to licensed staff immediately.
  • Utilizes safe transfer techniques when assisting residents with mobility.
  • Observes and communicates changes in residents' physical and cognitive/emotional conditions to the Wellness Director or charge nurse as necessary.
  • Assists residents with swallowing difficulties during meals.
  • Responds to emergencies promptly and calmly; Reports emergencies to the charge nurse and/or Wellness Director without delay.
  • Understands and applies Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Standard Precautions, OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens standards, and adheres to established infection control procedures and safety regulations.
  • Ensures cleanliness in residents' rooms and promptly reports any safety and sanitation violations to the supervisor.
  • Documents service provision on company forms.
  • Operates necessary medical equipment and communication devices.
  • Responsible for planning the wellness schedule, ideally one month in advance but no less than two weeks.
  • Participates in an on-call rotation for staffing needs; Responsible for arranging coverage for open shifts.
  • Must be reachable by phone 24/7 while on-call for staffing requirements and available to fill open shifts if necessary.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Provides comprehensive care and services to assigned residents and assists other wellness associates as needed.
  • Participates in and supports resident-centered activities.
  • Maintains sensory enhancement devices such as eyeglasses and hearing aids.
  • Completes housekeeping tasks including bed-making, linen changes, and cleaning duties.
  • Handles residents' laundry as required.
  • Escorts residents and coordinates internal transportation needs.
  • Assists residents with personal correspondence and telephone use upon request.
  • Conducts room checks and rounds on residents.
  • Monitors for environmental safety hazards.
  • Assists with dining-related tasks, including escorting residents to the dining area and serving meals.
  • Attends and engages in staff meetings and mandatory training sessions.
  • Employs tactful communication techniques in sensitive situations.
  • Follows up with appropriate staff, residents, or others regarding reported issues and concerns.
  • Acts as a representative for public relations to guests and visitors.
  • Demonstrates respect for the heritage, values, and wisdom of residents and an understanding of the aging process.
  • Collaborates with associates in other departments to ensure necessary care and services are delivered.
  • Participates in assigned projects or committees.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must maintain certification in the state of employment if required.
  • Completion of state-mandated education/certificates/testing related to medication aides and the company’s medication aide skills competency checklist.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Must be in good physical health and free from communicable diseases; Ability to lift, bend, and maneuver the medication cart as required; Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Completion of drug testing and criminal background checks upon hire and as requested by the supervisor.
  • Experience in Assisted Living is preferred.
