Key Responsibilities of the Medication Technician

The Medication Technician's primary duties include: 1) Administering or assisting with the administration and/or supervision of medications to residents in a safe, precise, and timely manner (in accordance with State regulations); 2) Providing both physical and emotional support to all residents in a way that upholds their dignity, choices, and individuality; and 3) Overseeing the wellness staffing schedule. The Medication Technician reports to the on-duty supervisor and the Wellness Director.

Core Responsibilities of the Medication Technician

  • Administers or supervises medication administration as per physician orders documented on the medication administration record (MAR).
  • Records administered medications on the MAR following company policy; reviews MARs immediately after administration and before the end of the shift to ensure accuracy.
  • Conducts shift change reports with incoming and outgoing personnel.
  • Maintains the security of the medication cart and narcotic keys throughout the shift; performs narcotic counts at the start and end of each shift per company procedures.
  • Assists residents with daily living activities, including bathing, dressing, personal hygiene, toileting, eating, and mobility.
  • Collaborates effectively with peers and other team members.
  • Maintains professionalism when interacting with residents and their families.
  • Reports any suspected or observed instances of abuse to licensed staff immediately.
  • Utilizes safe transfer techniques when assisting residents with mobility.
  • Observes and communicates changes in residents' physical and cognitive/emotional conditions to the Wellness Director or charge nurse as necessary.
  • Assists residents with swallowing difficulties during meals.
  • Responds promptly and calmly to emergencies; reports emergencies to the charge nurse and/or Wellness Director.
  • Understands and implements CDC Standard Precautions, OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens standard, and adheres to established infection control protocols and safety regulations.
  • Ensures cleanliness in residents' rooms and promptly reports safety and sanitation violations to the supervisor.
  • Documents services provided on company forms.
  • Operates medical equipment, copy machines, fax machines, and telephones as required.
  • Responsible for planning the wellness schedule ideally one month in advance, but no less than two weeks.
  • Participates in an on-call rotation for staffing needs; responsible for securing coverage for open shifts.
  • Must be reachable by phone 24/7 while on-call for staffing needs and available to fill open shifts if necessary.

Additional Responsibilities of the Medication Technician

  • Provides necessary care and services to assigned residents and assists other wellness associates as needed.
  • Participates in and supports resident-centered activities.
  • Cares for sensory enhancement devices such as eyeglasses and hearing aids.
  • Completes housekeeping tasks such as bed-making, linen changes, vacuuming, and cleaning bathrooms.
  • Washes residents' laundry as required.
  • Escorts residents and coordinates internal transportation needs.
  • Assists residents with personal correspondence and telephone use when requested.
  • Conducts room checks and resident rounds.
  • Monitors for environmental safety hazards.
  • Assists with dining-related tasks, including escorting residents to the dining room, setting up and cleaning tables, serving meals, and busing tables.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings and mandatory training sessions.
  • Utilizes tactful communication techniques in sensitive situations.
  • Follows up with appropriate staff, residents, or other individuals regarding reported issues and concerns.
  • Acts as a representative for public relations to guests and visitors.
  • Demonstrates respect for the heritage, values, and wisdom of residents, and an understanding of the aging process.
  • Collaborates with associates in other departments to ensure necessary care and services are provided.
  • Participates in assigned projects or committees.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills Required

  • Must maintain certification in the state of employment if required.
  • Completion of state-required education/certificates/testing related to medication aides, along with the company medication aide skills competency checklist.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Must be in good physical health and free of communicable diseases; lifting, bending, and pushing the medication cart throughout the facility is required; must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Completion of drug testing and criminal background checks upon hire and as requested by the supervisor.
  • Experience in Assisted Living is preferred.
