Summary:



Barr Engineering Company is seeking a geologist to join its team and undertake challenging and progressive work on projects related to the investigation, evaluation, and remediation of contaminated sites.



Responsibilities may include:



  • Performing or coordinating the completion of ASTM Phase I environmental site assessments in support of property transactions;
  • Designing, implementing, and coordinating activities associated with Phase II investigations, including investigations of contaminated soil, sediment, groundwater, surface water, and vapor intrusion;
  • Interpreting data and developing site conceptual models;
  • Developing site management strategies and response action plans (RAPs), including conducting remediation technology evaluations and feasibility studies;
  • Estimating costs associated with these types of activities;
  • Completing contracting associated with these activities;
  • Assistance with the preparation of technical reports;
  • Responding to quotes and proposals;
  • On-site investigations of contaminated soil, sediment, groundwater, surface water, and soil gas;
  • Aquifer test performance and analysis;
  • Construction observation.


Other responsibilities may include:



  • Observing drilling and monitoring well installation;
  • Classifying soil and bedrock samples;
  • Collecting samples for field screening and laboratory analysis.


Minimum Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in geology, hydrogeology, or related disciplines;
  • 5 or more years of relevant work experience;
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with project team members, regulators, and clients;
  • Strong technical and problem-solving skills;
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and completeness;
  • Strong computer skills, including word processing and use of spreadsheets;
  • A flexible working style and the ability to work independently and with teams of specialists to meet client and project needs;
  • Willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedules to meet project needs;
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record;
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship from Barr Engineering Company.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Master's degree in environmental, civil, geological, or chemical engineering; geology; or hydrogeology; or related disciplines;
  • Registered professional geologist or ability to become registered within one year;
  • 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER) certification;
  • Project management and leadership experience with complex projects;
  • Experience conducting communications, meetings, and negotiations with clients and regulatory and agency personnel;
  • Experience with staff mentoring, building client relationships, and business development.


A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr Engineering Company office and one's home office.



This position can be based out of Barr Engineering Company's Minneapolis, Duluth, or Hibbing, Minnesota, offices.



Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required. Safety training will be provided. Applicants may be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of specific clients.
