The Surgical Patient Advocate serves as a crucial supporter and educator for patients and their families throughout the surgical and cancer care journey.
Key Responsibilities
A typical day for a Surgical Patient Advocate at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Treating all patients with respect and professionalism.
- Delivering competent clinical support during patient visits, recognized as an expert in the relevant specialty.
- Facilitating effective communication between patients and healthcare professionals.
- Providing educational resources and guidance to patients and their families.
- Welcoming patients warmly and efficiently managing their information.
- Accurately executing physician orders.
- Guiding patients through the healthcare system while advocating strongly for their needs.
- Assisting patients and families in managing the emotional challenges associated with cancer.
- Coordinating appointments to ensure timely access to diagnostic and therapeutic services, accommodating patient preferences when possible.
- Handling patient inquiries via phone, including appointment scheduling and problem resolution, while triaging urgent calls as necessary.
- Communicating professionally with physicians.
- Conveying messages to clinicians and following up as required.
- Ensuring all necessary materials for new patient visits are prepared in advance.
- Advising patients on required documents for their visits.
- Efficiently preparing new patient records in accordance with practice standards.
- Gathering clinical information to facilitate appropriate referral scheduling.
- Encouraging referrals and organizing new appointments based on clinical needs.
- Investigating scheduling alternatives if wait times are excessive, and following up with patients and physicians as appropriate.
- Identifying and addressing barriers to care that may impede timely treatment.
- Connecting patients with relevant resources and social support systems.
- Assisting patients in accessing financial services for healthcare needs.
- Collaborating with research teams to identify potential candidates for clinical trials when applicable.
- Building relationships with hospital and community services.
- Engaging in community education to enhance public awareness.
- Participating in practice hours across various locations as needed.
Qualifications
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Registered Nurse (RN) with an Associate's degree, Diploma, or BSN.
- A minimum of 3 years of nursing experience in a related field (Surgery/Oncology).
- Proficient computer skills.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Excellent critical thinking capabilities.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
- New Jersey State Professional Registered Nurse License.
