This is a "continuous recruitment" which means we will accept applications on a continuous basis and conduct interviews periodically. Applicants may apply and interview only one time during a six-month period.

POSITION SUMMARY:
This role is part of the Selma Fire Department's Emergency Medical Services Division. It involves working on an ambulance to provide emergency medical care.

The successful candidate will deliver the highest level of care, treatment, and transport for all patients in a timely and safe manner as per the guidelines established by the Fresno County EMS agency and Selma Fire Department policies.

This is per diem employment with no set hours established and no benefits.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Deliver Advanced Life Support services to patients in both pre-hospital and inter-facility settings.
- Maintain, operate, and execute prescribed treatments at emergency sites by performing activities such as providing accurate reports regarding patients' conditions, necessary interventions, and medical outcomes of treatments administered.
- Assess the nature and extent of illnesses or injuries to establish and prioritize medical procedures.
- Provide cardiac monitoring and initiate intravenous access for medication or fluid administration.
- Perform advanced airway management and administer various medications.
- Assist in extricating trapped individuals and provide initial treatment at emergency scenes.
- Transport patients to receiving and extended care facilities and communicate with medical personnel.
- Administer other basic and advanced life support procedures recognized by Fresno County EMS authority.

The successful candidate will maintain a professional demeanor and appearance at all times while representing the Selma Fire Department; ensure the accuracy and completion of all paperwork; assist in the upkeep of EMS equipment and facilities; may participate in public education programs and training initiatives; and perform other duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:
The geography of the local area; all relevant policies, procedures, and protocols applicable to this position.

Ability to:
Drive an ambulance safely in accordance with traffic laws; maintain records and prepare reports; understand and execute oral and written instructions; foster cooperative working relationships; utilize all equipment carried by an ambulance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession of a current State of California Paramedic License and Fresno County Paramedic Certificate (required prior to employment).
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support and Advanced Life Support certifications.
- Current California Ambulance Driver certificate with a valid Medical Examiner's card.
- Possession of an appropriate California driver's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.

Requires a very high degree of concentration for extended periods; ability to analyze and interpret data from various sources; make corrective decisions under stress; utilize both strength and agility in handling emergency medical situations including moderate walking, lifting of moderate to heavy objects (100+ pounds), climbing, crawling, stooping, and bending, as well as a high degree of hand/eye coordination and the ability to hear, taste, and smell.

Members of the California Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).

In accordance with the California Public Employees Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA), the City of Selma will offer the following retirement benefit (2.0% at 62) to new PERS members beginning January 1, 2013 with three (3) years final compensation.

Existing PERS members with no break in service will receive the 2.7% at 55 formula with three (3) years final compensation.

The City pays a portion of the employee and dependent coverage costs of group medical, dental, and vision insurance. Life insurance - $100,000 per employee. Short and long-term disability insurance. 12 working days vacation per year. Additional days based on years of service. 12 days sick leave per year.
