Job Description

Job Summary:

Housing Matters is seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual to join our team as a Homelessness Prevention Specialist. As a key member of our staff, you will play a vital role in supporting our mission to end homelessness in Santa Cruz County.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for shelter guests, ensuring their well-being and dignity are respected at all times.
  • Assist guests in accessing day services, providing support and guidance as needed.
  • Provide exceptional customer service, responding to guest inquiries and concerns in a professional and empathetic manner.
  • Distribute snacks and supplies, promoting a sense of community and comfort among guests.
  • Implement housing first and harm reduction strategies, working collaboratively with staff and community organizations to achieve our goals.
  • Ensure professional boundaries are maintained, adhering to program-specific policies and procedures.
  • Utilize de-escalation techniques to resolve conflicts and promote a peaceful environment.
  • Communicate effectively with staff, safety personnel, and community resources, ensuring seamless coordination and support.
  • Complete Incident Reports as necessary, maintaining accurate documentation for each program.
  • Support staff and community organizations during program activities, fostering a sense of teamwork and collaboration.
  • Attend required staff and agency meetings and trainings, staying up-to-date on best practices and industry developments.
  • Perform other assigned duties, contributing to the overall success of Housing Matters.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; degree in social work, counseling, or related field preferred.
  • Knowledge of Spanish a plus, but not required.
  • CPR and de-escalation/restraint certification required; EMT certification advantageous.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision, demonstrating strong problem-solving skills and adaptability.
  • Understanding of barriers to housing for individuals experiencing homelessness, as well as de-escalation techniques and radio communication protocols.
  • Knowledge of sanitation techniques and ability to maintain a clean and safe environment.

  • Competitive hourly rate, ranging from $20.06 to $25.61 per hour.
  • Full-time or part-time opportunities available, with benefits and opportunities for advancement.
  • Weekend shifts may be required, but we offer a flexible schedule to accommodate your needs.
