Position Summary

Title: Chef

Reports To: Kitchen Manager

Schedule: Monday - Tuesday & Friday - Sunday

Compensation: $22.23/hour

Classification: Hourly, Non-exempt, 40 Hours/Week

Union Representation: This role is represented by AFSCME Local 999.


The Chef plays a crucial role in preparing and delivering high-quality lunch and dinner services, ensuring that fresh and nutritious meals are provided during client serving times. This position involves a variety of food preparation tasks and assumes full responsibility for the lunch and dinner shifts, while ensuring adherence to all management policies and procedures. Key responsibilities include:

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversee meal service to guarantee a delightful and memorable dining experience for guests.
  • Manage cooking and meal service operations.
  • Set up and clean the kitchen post-lunch and dinner.
  • Maintain a clean and hygienic kitchen environment at all times.
  • Ensure all food stocks are stored under optimal conditions.
  • Prepare dishes according to established recipes and in the correct quantities.
  • Operate the department in compliance with relevant legislation and maintain accurate records.
  • Communicate any anticipated issues promptly to the Kitchen Manager.
  • Ensure fair and courteous treatment of all staff under your supervision.
  • Meet personal grooming and appearance standards regarding cleanliness and hygiene.
  • Adhere to Health and Safety policies and regulations.
  • Possess a strong understanding of health and safety, hygiene, equal opportunities, HIPAA, and other relevant legislation.
  • Maintain composure under pressure and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Physical Requirements:

This position involves heavy work, requiring continuous standing and movement. The role may involve exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years of proven experience as a Chef or Cook.
  • Certification as a Food Handler with the MN Department of Health is preferred.
  • Passion for cooking and delivering high-quality meals.
  • Excellent time management abilities.
  • Ability to remain calm and manage various tasks simultaneously.
  • Hands-on experience with diverse kitchen equipment.
  • Current knowledge of cooking techniques and recipes.
  • Ability to pass a background check with the Department of Human Services.
  • Compliance with MN Department of Health regulations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
  • Capability to lift 10-40 lbs, and 50+ lbs with assistance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Personal experience with homelessness.
  • Fluency in languages spoken by our clients (Spanish, Amharic, Oromo, Somali, ASL).
