Job Overview

This role encompasses a variety of accounting responsibilities, including financial analysis, tax compliance, month-end closing processes, account reconciliation, and additional duties as required. The position also involves the preparation of the annual Form 990 and ensuring adherence to tax regulations concerning tuition waivers, employee benefits, 1099 filings, and other tax-related matters.

Key Responsibilities
  • Execute annual and periodic tax submissions (990, 990T, Sales and Use Tax, CT Entertainment Tax, W9, among others).
  • Oversee and manage Charitable Gift Annuities (CGA's).
  • Conduct account analyses as assigned, assess data for trends, and identify opportunities for enhancement.
  • Support Grant Accounting and reconciliation efforts.
  • Develop accounting processes within the business office to bolster financial reporting and assist the Bursar in maintaining a robust internal control framework.
  • Facilitate the review and approval process for student refunds.
  • Manage accounts with office supply vendors.
  • Assist in the annual financial audit, including the preparation of financial statements and related documentation; act as a liaison to auditors.
  • Provide assistance for other Business Office functions as they arise.
  • Offer backup support to the Payroll Office.
  • Comprehend and manage PBU and UBIT transactions.
  • Oversee deferred revenue accounts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Decision-Making Responsibilities
  • Interpret and apply federal and state tax regulations.
  • Interpret and apply university and financial accounting policies related to accounting transactions.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting or finance is required; a Master's degree and/or CPA designation is advantageous.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in the accounting or finance sector.
  • Strong understanding of general tax accounting principles.
  • Experience in higher education or non-profit sectors is preferred.
  • Prior experience with bank reconciliations, general ledger management, and month-end closings.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and budgets effectively.
  • Proficiency in Excel, including pivot tables and VLOOKUP functions.

  • Able to work independently while also being an effective team player.
  • Solid general computer skills, including proficiency in a Windows environment and familiarity with MS Office Suite, internet applications, and other necessary software.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage comfortably with students, colleagues, and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated capability to manage complex and multiple tasks in a professional and efficient manner.
  • Cultural competency to work with a diverse student and employee population.
