Overview and Role Summary

The primary objective of this role is to serve as the SMS Manager within the Regulatory and Compliance Division.

This position plays a crucial role in formulating the annual business strategy for Safety Management Systems (SMS), executing operational objectives aligned with this strategy, and aiding in the preparation of the annual operational budget for the department. The SMS Manager is responsible for conducting thorough and prompt investigations into all accidents and safety-related incidents. This includes compiling detailed reports for relevant divisions that outline the circumstances and root causes of incidents, followed by recommendations for corrective and preventive measures.

Supervision and Support

The individual in this position will report directly to the Program Management Officer.

Key Responsibilities

The following are essential duties associated with this role and are not exhaustive:

  • Design, organize, and implement training initiatives for department personnel to enhance their skills and knowledge, or facilitate safety-related training and inspections to promote employee health and safety.
  • Regularly review and update airport safety policies, practices, and procedures as needed.
  • Contribute to the creation of safety guidelines and related communications, ensuring the dissemination of educational materials.
  • Identify additional safety resource requirements and develop justifications for these needs.
  • Provide guidance and support to ensure the effective implementation of a Safety Management System Program.
  • Assess escalating situations, utilize critical thinking, and collaborate effectively with colleagues.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with internal teams and external partners.
  • Exhibit strong analytical capabilities, including the ability to gather data, conduct analyses, and present findings clearly.
  • Demonstrate the ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently while working independently.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to summarize and evaluate information succinctly.
  • Gather data, compile information, and prepare comprehensive reports.

Tenant Relations

The operations safety officer will assist in the formulation and enforcement of airport regulations and procedures.

Industry Engagement

The SMS Manager will actively participate in industry forums and events, serving as an informed representative to communicate the implications of regulatory mandates to industry stakeholders and government entities.

Communication Responsibilities

Generate and distribute safety bulletins, notices, and documentation to support safe airport operations. Prepare and deliver presentations to senior management and facilitate airport-wide meetings to foster a culture of safety.

Data Analysis and Reporting

Collect, interpret, and analyze safety data to identify trends and patterns that can enhance airfield safety performance and inform operational policies. Create detailed management reports and presentations to monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and progress. Publish weekly safety dashboards to align with Aviation Division objectives.

Process Enhancement

Identify, plan, and implement key improvements for projects and processes aimed at enhancing quality, reducing costs, increasing productivity, and minimizing cycle times through the elimination of inefficiencies.

Safety Department Oversight

Assist with compliance in airport safety operations and the management of safety contracts. Lead investigations into major airport incidents.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

This section outlines essential knowledge, skills, and abilities required for successful job performance:

  • Comprehensive operational knowledge of FAR Part 139.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Aviation Management, Business Administration, or Safety Management from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in airside operations or aviation safety management roles, with a preference for experience in ramp management and safety trend analysis.
  • Demonstrated technical expertise and a proven track record in management and leadership.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to foster partnerships with stakeholders at various levels.
  • Effective listening and persuasive communication skills.
