Surgical Pathology Technician

Key Responsibilities:
1. Assists the department Supervisor/Manager in the daily functions of the surgical pathology division.
2. Contributes to maintaining the accuracy and efficiency of services delivered by the grossing personnel.
3. Competent in executing all duties/responsibilities as permitted by the laboratory director/technical supervisor.
4. Conducts gross examination and dissection of large, intricate specimens in preparation for histological processing, typically involving whole organ specimens in a hospital setting.
5.

Offers technical guidance, training, and support to pathologist assistants/grossing technicians, students, and laboratory aides in methodologies, equipment, and workflow organization.

6. May oversee the orientation, training, and competency verification of newly onboarded grossing staff.
7. May perform New Hire Quality Control for pathologist assistants, grossing technicians, and any histotechs involved in gross examination.
8. May assist in determining the level of supervision (direct vs. indirect) required for each specimen type for individuals performing grossing tasks.
9. Ensure adherence to all corporate safety, quality control, and quality assurance standards, as well as local, federal, CLIA, and CAP regulations.
10. Engage directly with pathologists concerning gross dissection/description tasks, particularly for defined specimen types necessitating direct supervision by a pathologist.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred)
  • AAPA fellowship status and/or PA (ASCP)
  • Minimum of 1 year of surgical gross experience, including handling large, intricate specimens
  • Meets all criteria outlined in corporate Minimum Qualifications for Personnel Performing Tissue Gross Examinations SOP and 1988 CLIA CFR
