ROLE OVERVIEW:

The Community Skills/Personal Assistant plays a vital role in supporting students with special needs throughout their educational journey and extracurricular activities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise and monitor students during both instructional and non-instructional periods, including meal times and transportation.
  • Provide tailored instructional support to individual students or small groups as directed by the educator, ensuring accommodations and modifications are effectively implemented.
  • Assist educators in preparing classroom environments and instructional materials, while maintaining accurate student records and performance data.
  • Collaborate with teachers to design engaging lesson plans and Individual Education Programs, contributing to performance assessments.
  • Support teachers in tracking student progress and grades, encouraging students to monitor their academic standing.
  • Assist students with behavioral management and personal hygiene, promoting independence and understanding.
  • Ensure compliance with district policies by monitoring student use of technology and instructional equipment.
  • Transport students to off-campus activities as needed.
  • Provide assistance during meal times as required.
  • Employ appropriate techniques to manage challenging behaviors and support students during medical emergencies.
  • Administer medications in accordance with medical guidelines and parental consent.
  • Participate in staff meetings and professional development sessions.
  • Foster positive relationships between the Phoenix Union High School District and the community by demonstrating professionalism and confidentiality in all interactions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Training, and Experience:

A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required, along with two years of experience in a classroom setting or working with special needs children, or a combination of education and experience that meets these criteria.

Licensure and Certification:

Paraprofessional certification is preferred. Candidates must obtain Red Cross or EMT Certification, CPR Certification, and Non-Violent Behavior Management Certification within 60 days of hire, and maintain current status. An active Arizona Department of Public Safety IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card is required or must be obtained within the first 90 days of employment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position is performed in a classroom setting and throughout the school campus. Employees may encounter bodily fluids and contagious illnesses while working with students. The ability to lift up to 70 pounds is required.
