Job Summary

Columbia University seeks a highly skilled and experienced Assistant Director of Career Advising to provide career counseling and professional development services to students and alumni of the Law School.

Key Responsibilities
  • Counsel law students in all aspects of their professional formation and job search activities, including conducting practice interviews, providing career advice, and preparing students for successful interviews.
  • Develop and implement professional development workshops, panels, and other programs related to the Office of Private Sector Careers' mandate for J.D. and LL.M. students.
  • Stay abreast of legal recruiting industry trends by reviewing relevant publications, attending conferences, and participating in professional organizations.
  • Assist in refining and editing office publications and communications, planning and executing special projects and events, and undertaking other related tasks as requested.
Requirements
  • J.D. or LL.M. degree required.
  • 3-5 years' experience in the legal field, counseling field, or another professional field, with a focus on law practice, career counseling, legal recruiting, program planning, and/or professional development.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and sensitively with diverse constituencies and support an inclusive work environment.

  • Superior interpersonal skills, including the ability to advise and interact with diverse, multi-generational constituents.
  • Affinity for collaboration and ability to work well across all levels of an organization.
  • Ability to leverage work experience and professional network to develop meaningful relationships.
  • Organizational and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize and evaluate data.
  • Technological and computer literacy, including familiarity with or strong interest in developing knowledge of Symplicity, Campus Groups, Courseworks, and digital learning technology.
