Job Title: Veterinary Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled Veterinary Specialist to join our team at the University of Washington. As a Veterinary Specialist, you will play a critical role in providing veterinary care to nonhuman primates at our WaNPRC-Arizona Breeding Colony (ABC).

Job Summary:

The primary purpose of this position is to provide the appropriate environment to support outstanding biomedical research directed towards significant human health issues and nonhuman primate health and biology. You will work under the general supervision of the Veterinary Services supervisor to provide veterinary care, maintain records, and perform various tasks related to animal health and welfare.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide veterinary care to nonhuman primates, including routine check-ups, vaccinations, and medical procedures.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of animal health, treatments, and procedures.
  • Conduct health monitoring for all animals on an assigned basis and report any abnormalities to the veterinary staff.
  • Work with the Animal Technicians (AT) staff to triage animals and provide input on animal treatment response.
  • Participate in cross-trained duties as needed, including providing environmental enrichment and shipping specimens.
Requirements:
  • Associate Degree from an accredited school of animal technology or registration, certification, or licensure in an animal or veterinary technician field.
  • One year of experience working with nonhuman primates, with a strong commitment to promoting primate well-being.
  • Desktop computing skills, including word processing, spreadsheet design, and data entry.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Registration as an Animal Technician in the State of Arizona.
Conditions of Employment:

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a health assessment at a Health Clinic. The health assessment may include tuberculosis clearance, measles clearance, serum banking, immunizations, physical exam, and/or review of work health history.

Punctuality, regular, and predictable attendance are essential job functions of this position. You may be required to work with and take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially infectious agents.

This position involves handling non-human primates and human pathogenic organisms. The ability to work in an ABSL 2 with 3 practices containment facility is required.

Adhere to the WaNPRC Environmental Enhancement Plan requirements for NHPs and participate in the Behavioral Management and Positive Reinforcement primate Training Programs.
