The role involves comprehensive management and upkeep of the Wild Garden, which includes diverse ecosystems such as flatwoods, ponds, bogs, prairies, and sandhills. This unique garden showcases a variety of Florida native species, requiring a deep understanding of ecological interactions and future garden design. The successful candidate will utilize prescribed fire, herbicides, and mechanical weeding techniques to enhance plant diversity and manage growth effectively. This position is also responsible for enriching the garden's biodiversity with suitable native plants while developing and maintaining procedural records.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and execute informed strategies to sustain the garden's aesthetic appeal and plant diversity, ensuring the long-term integrity of its themes and managing invasive species.
- Assist in formulating and implementing strategic management plans spanning 3 to 5 years for the garden's development.
- Promote and support pollinator species through effective garden maintenance.
- Conduct regular inspections of the garden to evaluate maintenance requirements, including:
- Assessing plant health: monitoring for water stress, disease, damage, growth decline, and pruning needs.
- Identifying maintenance tasks: weeding (manual or herbicide application), thinning, dividing, and pruning.
- Ensure proper labeling of specimen plants and maintain interpretive displays.
- Collaborate with the Education Department to provide educational opportunities related to the Wild Garden.
- Administer herbicide and pesticide applications, including equipment calibration.
- Manage wildlife feeding stations and provide appropriate feed.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Associate's Degree in Horticulture, Botany, Geography, Environmental Studies, Natural Resource Management, or a related field from an accredited institution.
- A minimum of 5 years of practical experience in horticulture, specifically with Florida native plants or a related discipline.
- Aquatic pesticide license is preferred; candidates must be able to obtain this license.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Professional expertise in natural resource management and Florida native plant horticulture.
- Extensive knowledge of Florida native plants and ecosystems.
- Proficient in weed management through cultural practices and herbicide application.
- Ability to create and maintain operational management plans effectively.
- Experience in landscape management, including weed control, mowing, tree care, and maintenance of pollinator habitats.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, particularly regarding native plants.
- Project management skills with the ability to adhere to budget constraints.
- Experience supervising and collaborating with staff and volunteers.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Physical ability to lift a minimum of 60 pounds.
- Willingness to engage in prolonged physical activities such as standing, walking, bending, and lifting.
- Flexibility to work occasional weekends, evenings, or holidays as needed.
- Capability to perform strenuous outdoor work in Florida's climate throughout the year.
