SCHEDULE: Part-time, 12-20 hours per week

POSITION SUMMARY:

Second Harvest Heartland is a prominent food bank serving 59 counties in central Minnesota, with its headquarters in Brooklyn Park. The Neighbor Services Department comprises a dedicated team of 30 full-time professionals and Outreach Interns who play a vital role in supporting individuals and families facing food insecurity. Interns assist in disseminating information and providing support regarding available community food resources, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP).

As an intern, you will engage directly with community members at partner organizations and during community events. Your responsibilities will also include conducting outreach via phone from our Brooklyn Park office. Additionally, you will provide essential administrative support to the Neighbor Services department. Through participation in community outreach events, referrals to food resources, and assistance with office tasks, you will receive guidance from the Senior Neighbor Services Intern Advisor and engage in professional development opportunities alongside fellow interns and staff. This internship will equip you with valuable experience in community outreach, public speaking, and effective communication skills while enhancing your understanding of federal nutrition programs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Act as an advocate for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), gaining a thorough understanding of eligibility requirements.
  • Conduct outreach at partner organizations and via phone, which includes:
    1. Engaging with community members about SNAP, CSFP, and other relevant assistance programs.
    2. Providing information to enhance individuals' understanding and future use of SNAP/CSFP and other community resources.
    3. Collecting qualification information from interested clients for food assistance programs and referring them to the SNAP Outreach Team for application support.
  • Assist with administrative tasks, which will involve:
    1. Researching, updating, and creating community resource lists.
    2. Managing the department's high volume of incoming and outgoing correspondence related to SNAP, CSFP, and FOODRx programs.
    3. Preparing materials for staff and interns participating in community outreach events.
  • Make phone calls to community members interested in SNAP/CSFP to help assess their eligibility.
  • Provide feedback to Second Harvest Heartland regarding community needs.
  • Represent Second Harvest Heartland within the community.
  • Engage in professional development opportunities.
  • Complete additional tasks as assigned by your supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Some education or experience in a related field (social services, education, marketing, nutrition, public health, sociology, public policy, etc.).
  • Willingness to engage with diverse cultural and economic communities.
  • Some customer service experience is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Effective time-management and organizational abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate self-motivation.
  • Access to reliable transportation.
  • Comfort with modern technology, including computers and Microsoft Office Suite.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

TIME COMMITMENT:

  • Total time requirement: 6 months; 12-20 hours per week.
  • Work schedule: Flexible, generally Monday through Friday with potential for occasional weekend hours.
  • Work hours: Flexible, typically during regular business hours.
  • Work locations: Second Harvest Heartland office and various partner sites throughout the metro area.
