Key Responsibilities

As a Marine Machinery Mechanic, your responsibilities will encompass the following:

  • Conducting inspections, diagnosing issues, and executing operational tests and repairs on marine engines powered by diesel and gasoline (including both outboard and inboard types), stern drives, propellers, jet drives, as well as electrical and hydraulic systems to ensure equipment safety and functionality.
  • Employing established trade practices and techniques in welding (TIG, MIG, AC/DC stock, Oxy-acetylene), hydraulics, painting, electrical repairs, and fiberglass applications.
  • Designing, repairing, and modifying hydraulic and electric winch systems.
  • Installing and maintaining marine machinery such as steering systems, power drives, and control mechanisms, which involves disassembling, repairing, and reconstructing components like propellers and engines.
  • Managing the docking and undocking of vessels, navigation tasks, and fueling operations.

  • A valid State driver's license must be maintained throughout employment.
  • An official uniform from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is mandatory.
  • Successful completion of the Motorboat Operator Certification Course (MOCC) is required.
  • Candidates must obtain and maintain Forklift Operator Certification.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification must be obtained and maintained.
  • Candidates must be capable of swimming safely in cold, fast-moving water.
  • A probationary period may be required for selectees.
  • Individuals assigned male at birth must be registered for the Selective Service.

Qualifications

By the closing date of this announcement, candidates must meet the qualifications as outlined in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Handbook X118C, Job Qualification System for Trades and Labor Occupation:

While no specific experience, education, or training is mandated, applicants must demonstrate a minimum level of competency related to the position and the Assessment Questionnaire to be rated qualified for consideration. Candidates must meet any screen-out elements at an acceptable level and achieve an average rating of at least acceptable across all elements. Only experience, education, or training acquired before the closing date will be considered.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: The qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen-out element, which typically appears as question 1 in the online questionnaire. Those who meet the minimal acceptable qualification requirement will be considered for further evaluation; those who do not will be rated ineligible and eliminated from consideration. The remaining candidates will be rated against the other Job Elements.

The Job Elements for this position include:

  • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, and repair.
  • Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Troubleshooting skills.

Experience includes both paid and unpaid work, including volunteer roles through National Service programs and other organizations. All qualifying experience, including volunteer work, will be credited.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
