About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Counsel, Privacy & AI to join our industry-leading privacy program at Medidata Solutions. As a key member of our tight-knit legal department, you will work closely with our cross-functional teams to advance the development of new treatments.

Responsibilities
  • Partner with our commercial team on data privacy matters during contract negotiations with customers and partners.
  • Advise our R&D and Product teams on privacy-by-design best practices, including data privacy, data use, and data security requirements.
  • Support our Privacy & AI Governance Program, including policy reviews, updates, assessment management, and audit support.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional partners on privacy-related issue management.
  • Maintain awareness of global privacy laws and regulations, and proactively advise our business teams on their impact.
  • Engage and support our leadership in privacy-focused industry groups.
Qualifications
  • Agility and willingness to broaden areas of expertise.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with technical and operational competence.
  • Ability to collaborate with multiple teams simultaneously, and communicate actionable advice to technologists and non-privacy practitioners about complex privacy regimes.
  • Experience in reviewing and negotiating data processing exhibits, standard contractual clauses, and other data agreements.
  • J.D. and 2+ years of experience advising clients on global data privacy laws.
  • At least one core IAPP CIPP, CIPM, or CIPT certification, or a willingness to obtain such certification within 3 months of start.
  • Fluency in the EU's GDPR and adopt implement requirements from other emerging data privacy laws as may be required.
  • Experience advising clients in the healthcare, life sciences, or equivalent industry focused on data privacy and regulatory compliance is a plus.
  • Experience advising clients on HIPAA Privacy and Security Rule compliance is a plus.
  • Understanding of SaaS and/or experience working alongside product and technical teams is a plus.
  • Member in good standing of the New York State Bar or registered as in-house counsel pursuant to Part 522 of the New York State Court of Appeals.

Base pay is one part of the Total Rewards that Medidata provides to compensate and recognize employees for their work. Most sales positions are eligible for a commission on the terms of applicable plan documents, and many of Medidata's non-sales positions are eligible for annual bonuses. The compensation range for this position is: $185k - $210K.
