Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Collection Specialist to join our team at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. As a key member of our revenue cycle team, you will be responsible for ensuring accurate and timely billing and collection of patient accounts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collection Activity Duties
    • Determine the appropriate billing procedures have been completed and take corrective action if necessary.
    • Analyze patient accounts and verify that insurance billing is complete.
    • Determine the collection process to be followed to resolve accounts.
    • Contact patients via telephone or in writing to remind them of their obligations or refer accounts to external collection agencies.
    • Enter and verify patient demographic and insurance coverage data.
    • Determine the appropriateness of filing an estate claim upon notification of patient death.
    • Interact with attorneys and their staff to establish case status and monitor progress.
    • Appeal underpayments by third-party payers when necessary.
    • Send financial care assistance applications to guarantors as warranted.
    • Process credit card payments.
  • Account Maintenance
    • Conduct skip tracing on returned statements and correspondence with patients.
    • Provide support to the customer service team as requested.
    • Respond to insurance team inquiries.
    • Process NSF check returns.
    • Process financial care assistance discounts.
    • Order personal pay account ledgers.
    • Analyze and process weekly and monthly system-generated reports.
    • Respond to correspondence from patients and guarantors.
    • Determine accounts requiring maintenance and prepare adjustment corrections.
    • Analyze credit balances on accounts and initiate corrective action.
  • Reception Area Coverage
    • Provide coverage for the department's switchboard as needed, answering incoming calls, greeting patients, and directing visitors.
Requirements
  • One year of experience in finance, accounting, business administration, or a closely related field, or a combination of education and experience.
  • Collection, consumer credit, or business experience requiring knowledge of collection methods and procedures.
